Darlinghurst starts immediately east of the CBD, about 1 km out, and is named for Eliza Darling, wife of Governor Ralph Darling.1 Oxford Street is its main commercial road. Victoria Street is the other café strip, and most of its cafés put tables outside.1 Most residents live in apartments or terraced houses, and St Vincent's Hospital and the National Art School are both in the suburb.1

Potts Point, about 2 km east of the CBD, is small and dense: 7,183 residents at the 2021 census, roughly 11,493 per square kilometer.2 It is named for Joseph Hyde Potts, who worked for the Bank of New South Wales. Macleay Street forms its eastern edge, and the suburb has the highest concentration of art deco architecture in Australia, including the Macleay Regis and Cahors apartment blocks on Macleay Street.2

Local tip: Rushcutters Bay Kiosk opens at 07:30 every day; take your coffee before 10:30 if you like dogs, since they run off-leash in the park until then.7

Victoria Street, from the green ban to Tropfest

The street's terraces nearly went in the 1970s. Developer Frank Theeman planned several tall towers on the Victoria Street heritage precinct, and in 1972 residents persuaded the Builders Labourers' Federation to put a green ban on the site.3 Juanita Nielsen, who published the local paper NOW from her house on the street, campaigned against the scheme. She was last seen on 4 July 1975, after a meeting at the Carousel nightclub in Kings Cross, and her body has never been found.3

Tropicana, one of the strip's long-running cafés, gave its name to a film festival.1 John Polson started Tropfest there in 1993 with a program of nine short films.4 Further along, Glider Espresso Bar and Eatery at 197 Victoria Street opens at 06:30, Tuesday to Sunday; Hills Cafe & Bakery is at number 274 and Bites Cafe at 390.

Kings Cross, Macleay Street and Elizabeth Bay

Kings Cross is named for an intersection that became Queen's Cross for Victoria's diamond jubilee in 1897 and was renamed in 1905.5 For much of the 20th century it was an entertainment district full of clubs and cafés, home to writers, painters and actors; after the lockout laws took effect in March 2014, several nightclubs and pubs closed.5 Robert Woodward's dandelion-shaped El Alamein Fountain dates from 1961, and Kings Cross station lies underground beneath Darlinghurst Road.52

Frankie's Beans is at 1 Kings Cross Road. Room 10 in Llankelly Place and Barrel One at 4 Roslyn Street both open daily 07:00–15:00, and ZINC is at 77 Macleay Street. The street is named for Alexander Macleay, Colonial Secretary from 1826 to 1837,2 whose Elizabeth Bay House was built between 1835 and 1839 by John Verge and is now a museum.6 Nearby, Shuk at 61-69 Roslyn Gardens serves daily from 06:00.

A park kiosk on Rushcutters Bay

The first European settlers collected rushes here, which gave the bay its name.7 The park was created in 1878–79, and it now has a kiosk, tennis courts and a fenced sports oval.87 Rushcutters Bay Kiosk opens daily at 07:30 and closes at 15:00 on weekdays and 15:30 at weekends. Dogs can run off-leash in the park from 15:30 to 10:30, except on the oval and in the Waratah playground.7

Early openers east of the city

Brown Beans opens first, at 05:30 on weekdays and 06:00 at weekends. Algorithm, Cafe C&M, Elizabeth Bay Café and L'expressohouse Coffee all open at 06:00 on weekdays, and Primary Coffee at 9 Ward Avenue does the same but closes at 12:00 on Mondays and 14:00 the rest of the week.

Weekends here look nothing like the CBD's. Darlinghurst and Potts Point cafés open on Saturday or Sunday almost without exception, though most still close by 16:00 on weekdays. Poppi's is one of the few that shuts on Sundays. For a later cup, Potts Point Providore serves daily until 20:00, and Ms. Cattea Tea Bar stays open until 21:00, Wednesday to Sunday.
