Glebe takes its name from the glebe (church land) that Governor Arthur Phillip granted in 1790 to Richard Johnson, chaplain of the First Fleet: 400 acres that stayed with the Church until the 1970s.1 The suburb lies about 3 km south-west of the CBD, between Blackwattle and Rozelle Bays to the north and Broadway to the south, and Glebe Point Road is its main shopping strip.1
Chippendale, about 2 km south of the CBD, is named for William Chippendale, a farmer granted a 95-acre estate in 1819.4 Its center is the former Carlton & United brewery, closed in December 2006 and rebuilt as Central Park, and the small suburb now has more than a dozen galleries, White Rabbit Gallery among them.4
Local tip: Glebe Markets open at 10:00 on Saturdays; have breakfast first at Joe and Sal on Glebe Point Road, which opens at 06:30 at weekends.2

The Inner West Light Rail stops at Glebe and Jubilee Park, about 20 minutes from Central, and several bus routes cross the suburb.1 Central Park's 5.8-hectare site is bounded by Broadway on the north, Abercrombie Street on the west and Kensington Street on the east.5 Toby's Estate is at 32-36 City Road, and Déli/sia panino & espresso at 284 Bridge Road, which opens at 07:00 on most days and is closed on Tuesdays.
In the 19th century Glebe split by geography: wealthy villas near the point, slaughterhouses and workers' housing near Broadway. It became a municipality in 1859, and much of its old housing has since been restored.1 The Wedge Espresso at 53-55 Glebe Point Road is a long-running local favorite that puts European twists on brunch, according to Broadsheet; it opens 07:00–14:30 Monday to Saturday.3
Well Connected Cafe is at 35 Glebe Point Road, Sappho's Books, Cafe & Wine Bar at 51 and Oh My Days at 99. Near the far end, Joe and Sal Glebe Cafe at 355 opens at 06:00 on weekdays and 06:30 at weekends.
Glebe Markets run on Saturdays, 10:00–16:00, at Glebe Public School, 9-25 Derwent Street, with a handful of food stalls among the rest, a short walk or bus ride from Central.2
Frasers Property bought the brewery site in 2007 for A$208 million.5 Its centerpiece, One Central Park, by Ateliers Jean Nouvel with PTW Architects, opened in December 2013 with vertical gardens by the French botanist Patrick Blanc. A heliostat cantilevered from the 28th floor of the east tower directs sunlight down into the atrium, and in 2014 the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat named it the best tall building worldwide.5
Kensington Street, a lane of heritage workers' terraces beside newer buildings, won Good Design Awards for its redevelopment in 2016.4
Toby's Estate runs its headquarters café in Chippendale, which Broadsheet rates for consistently good coffee.6 Terra Cotta Roasters, at 74-80 Ivy Street, opens daily 07:00–15:00.
Abercrombie Street has the most cafés on the Chippendale side. Something For Jess at number 27, which Broadsheet calls a community hub, opens at 08:00 on weekdays, and Broadsheet credits Cafe Giulia, at 92, with filling the street's café gap.6 101 Kissa is at 94a, and Cafe Abercrombie opens at 05:00, Monday to Saturday.
