Newtown sits about 4 km south-west of the CBD, split between the City of Sydney and Inner West Council.1 King Street, its main street, follows a long ridge that rises near the University of Sydney, and Enmore Road branches off at Newtown Bridge; together they run 9.1 km with more than 600 shopfronts.1 The strip is described as the longest and most complete late Victorian and Federation-era commercial precinct in Australia, and the press calls King Street "Eat Street".1

Low rents and the nearby university filled share-houses with students in the 1960s and 1970s, giving the suburb a bohemian name, and gentrification followed the business closures of the 1990s.1 Erskineville, to the south-east, was called Macdonaldtown until Parliament renamed it in 1893, after Erskine Villa, the 1830 home of the Wesleyan minister George Erskine.2

Local tip: At weekends The Twelve Cafe opens at 06:00 on both days and Grounded 2050 at 06:00 on Saturdays, well before most of King Street starts trading.

Toward the southern edge, Numero Uno Coffee Roasters at 11 May Street opens at 07:00 every day, and Sample Coffee Pro Shop is at 75 Mary Street.
