The Rocks sits on the western shore of Sydney Cove, where the British colony was established in 1788; the Cadigal people knew the area as Tallawoladah.1 It takes its name from the sandstone of its early houses, which replaced huts of wattle, daub and thatch.1 South of Circular Quay, the CBD's office grid runs along George, Pitt and Castlereagh Streets, and the light rail now glides down a pedestrian stretch of George Street.2
CBD coffee keeps office hours. Time Out's July 2024 guide to CBD coffee marked Regiment, Skittle Lane, Cabrito and Benchmark Espresso as closed on weekends, and described a queue at Skittle Lane that snakes into the neighboring lobby.3 The wider pattern is similar: about a third of CBD cafés close on both Saturday and Sunday, and roughly two-thirds stop serving by 16:00 on weekdays.

Getting around the CBD by metro, light rail and ferry
Sydney Metro's city section opened on 19 August 2024 between Chatswood and Sydenham, adding CBD stations at Barangaroo, Martin Place and Gadigal, the new name for Pitt Street, as well as platforms at Central.4 The L2 Randwick light rail line began running on 14 December 2019 and the L3 Kingsford line on 3 April 2020. Both start outside Circular Quay station, head west along Alfred Street and turn south down George Street.2 The Coffee Box Espresso Bar is on Alfred Street, beside that first stretch of track.
Circular Quay hosts five commuter ferry wharves and is the terminus for almost every public ferry route on the harbour and the Parramatta River.5 Its railway station is the only one on the City Circle above ground. Between Bathurst and Hunter Streets, about 40% of George Street is closed to cars.2
The Rocks: plague, a bridge and the green bans
The Rocks came close to disappearing twice. After bubonic plague broke out in 1900, the state resumed land around The Rocks and Darling Harbour for demolition and inspected more than 3,800 properties, and in the 1920s several hundred buildings came down to make way for the Harbour Bridge.1 In the 1970s a redevelopment authority planned to replace most of the old buildings with high-density housing. The Rocks Residents Group, formed in February 1971, asked the Builders Labourers Federation for a green ban, which held until 1975.1
What survived is now a weekend destination: The Rocks Market runs every Saturday and Sunday with about 100 stalls.1 La Renaissance Pâtisserie and Cafe at 47 Argyle Street opens at 07:00 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends, closing at 18:00. The Rocks Cafe at 99 George Street serves daily until 22:00, and The Tea Cosy on Atherden Street opens from 09:00 on Saturdays and Sundays.
Coffee by the harbour at Farm Cove
East of the Opera House, Governor Macquarie founded the Royal Botanic Garden in 1816 on the site of the farm Arthur Phillip set up in 1788. The garden and the Domain are open every day of the year, and entry is free.6 Farm Cove Eatery sits downstairs from the Botanic House restaurant and serves daily 08:30–16:30.7
Closer to the ferries, Diggy Doo's Coffee at 2 Bridge Street opens weekdays 07:00–15:00 and weekends 08:30–14:30. Naala Badu Kiosk is open daily 09:00–16:00.
Early starts and late finishes in the CBD
The first espresso of the day comes at 05:00. Lime Sandwich and Espresso Bar and 6.AM by dedy's open then on weekdays, and Cupcakes on Pitt at 323 Pitt Street opens at 05:00 Monday to Saturday. BrewBros at 46A Druitt Street follows at 05:30, and Kingswood Coffee, Batch and June's Shoppe at 06:00.
Industry Beans at 38-40 York Street, the company's first Sydney outlet, opened in early 2019 and trades on weekends, 08:00–15:30.3 For later coffee, caffe tiamo stays open daily until midnight, and Old School Kafey at 459 Pitt Street serves until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Benchmark Espresso, opposite the QVB, charged A$3.30 for a regular coffee as of 2024.3
