Marrickville, about 7 km south-west of the CBD, is the largest suburb in the Inner West and lies mostly in the valley of the Cooks River.1 The village was laid out in 1855 on Thomas Chalder's Marrick Estate, named after his home of Marrick in England.1 Greek migrants opened shops on Marrickville Road after the Second World War, and Chinese and Vietnamese migrants set up along Illawarra Road from the 1980s; in 2021, 48.1% of residents were born overseas.1

Brickmaking made the suburb working class, factories began closing in the 1970s, and since 2013 breweries have filled many of the light-industrial streets left behind.1 Coffee keeps to the same streets: Double Roasters is on Victoria Road, Coffee Alchemy and Sample Coffee Roastery on Sydenham Road, and Black Market Coffee on Cadogan Street.

Local tip: Tommy Black opens at 04:00 on weekdays and 04:30 on Saturdays, early enough for a coffee before a dawn flight: Sydney Airport is about 5 km from Marrickville.1

Getting there: the new metro and the Inner West line

Marrickville station closed on 30 September 2024 so the Bankstown line could be converted to metro.1 Metro services through Marrickville and Dulwich Hill to Bankstown were due to start on Friday 30 October 2026, with the first train at 04:31 and services every four minutes at weekday peaks.2 The Inner West Light Rail terminus is near Dulwich Hill.1

Petersham station is on the Inner West lines, and its 1886 building is considered one of the grandest 19th-century stations in the Sydney area.5

Victoria Road and Sydenham Road roasters

Double Roasters opened at 199 Victoria Road in 2011 as a small space for sampling a young roaster's coffee. Its founders moved the roasting elsewhere and sold the café in 2013; the new owners renamed it Wicks Park Cafe, but the old name stuck. The house blend, Flight Path, is named for the planes passing overhead to land.3 It opens at 05:00 Monday to Saturday.

Coffee Alchemy spent nearly 20 years on Addison Road before moving to a larger room at 87 Sydenham Road in 2021, when its old building was sold for redevelopment. The frosted pendant lights, gold mirror, Synesso espresso machine and church pews came along, and co-owner Hazel de los Reyes holds an Australian cupping title.4

Petersham's Little Portugal

Portuguese migrants settled first in Paddington, then moved to Petersham in the late 20th century for cheaper housing, and Marrickville Council later promoted the suburb as Little Portugal.5 Portuguese restaurants and shops line New Canterbury Road and Audley Street, and Bairro Português, an annual festival on Audley Street, marks the connection.5

Sweet Belem, founded in 2003 behind curtained windows on New Canterbury Road, is known for its pastéis de nata (Portuguese custard tarts). José Silva, formerly a chef at Guillaume at Bennelong, took over the family business in 2012.6 Further along, Honeymoon Patisserie at 96 New Canterbury Road opens daily 07:30–18:00.
