Most Rio cafés wind down by early evening. Copacabana has the most that stay open late, led by Stalos, at Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana, 986, which never closes. The others are spread out, from Le Dépanneur in Botafogo and Maya Café in Flamengo to Jojô in Jardim Botânico and Allegra Caffè in Tijuca.

After dark, the city’s social life moves to the botequim, or boteco, the corner bar where people meet for a drink, cheap snacks and conversation; in Rio the scruffier ones are nicknamed pé-sujo (dirty foot). The word comes from botica, the old Portuguese for a shop, which goes back to the Greek apotheke.1 Lapa, known as the cradle of bohemian Rio, is the center of that night, with samba, forró, choro and MPB.2

Local tip: Visit the Jardim Botânico on a Tuesday to Thursday afternoon and leave when the arboretum closes at 17:00, just as Jojô on Rua Pacheco Leão opens.

Where these cafés are: Copacabana & Leme (3), Tijuca, Vila Isabel & Maracanã (1), Lagoa, Jardim Botânico & Gávea (1), Botafogo, Humaitá & Urca (1), Flamengo, Catete & Laranjeiras (1).
