Phnom Penh grew up where the Tonlé Sap meets the Mekong and the Bassac branches off to the south, and it has been Cambodia's capital since 1865.1 Coffee reached the country under French rule, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.2

The everyday cup still comes from a cart. Sellers work from motorbike sidecars or converted tuk-tuks and hand over iced coffee in a plastic cup or a tied bag with a straw.3 Café chains followed: Brown Coffee, Cambodia's first homegrown chain, opened on Street 214 in 2009.4 Over the past decade espresso bars and independent roasters have joined them, and some owners roast in the city.5

Roasters are scattered rather than packed into one quarter: Chadajima Coffee Roasters and Roast. sit a block apart near the Russian Market, Six Bean Coffee Roasters and d.e.s. coffee roasters are in Toul Kork, Story Coffee Roasters is on Street 21 in Tonle Bassac, and Kuro Specialty Coffee is on Street 228 in Daun Penh. For coffee at 03:00, M Cafe on Wat Koh Street, RUPP Blend Cafe at the Royal University, 365 Coffee on Street 484 and Kongfu in Tonle Bassac are open 24 hours.

How coffee works in Phnom Penh

Iced coffee is the default order. Ask for gah-fay dteuk-gork (កាហ្វេទឹកកក, iced coffee) and it comes black over a cup packed with ice, or with sweetened condensed milk for a sweeter glass.3 Street sellers brew it thick and dark through cloth filters or large drip filters.6 When the glass is empty, some drinkers pour jasmine tea over the leftover grounds to rinse the coffee from their mouths.6

Cafés take US dollars and riel (៛), often side by side, so carry small bills of both.7 Riel covers most everyday payments, and shops round the rate to 4,000 riel per dollar, so US$1.50 can be one dollar plus 2,000 riel, or 6,000 riel.8 US coins aren't accepted, banks refuse US$2 bills, and worn or torn notes are often turned down.8 The National Bank of Cambodia's official rate was 4,084 riel to the dollar on 26 October 2026.9

Tipping isn't part of Cambodian culture, though it is becoming more common in tourist areas and is appreciated.10 Younger customers use cafés as study rooms and offices, meeting there to study, make content and build startups.2 Wi-Fi turns up well beyond coffee shops, in some unlikely places.8

The street trade starts before dawn: one cart owner interviewed in 2024 sold from 04:00 to 21:00, with the busiest hours from 08:00 to noon.11 November to March is relatively cool and windy, April and May are hot and dry with peaks near 40 °C, and June to September is the green, wet season.8 In the rains, showers usually come in the late afternoon, so take a terrace table in the morning.12
