Tonle Bassac shares its name with the Bassac River, which begins at Phnom Penh.1 The quarter belongs to Khan Chamkar Mon, the southernmost district of central Phnom Penh, whose Khmer name means mulberry farm.2 Several embassies, Australia's and the Philippines' among them, are in Tonle Bassac.3
Its cafés follow two lines: the lanes around Street 308, between Norodom and Sothearos boulevards, and Norodom Boulevard (41) south toward Boeng Trabek. Sothearos Boulevard adds Breath Coffee at No. 1 and Aigo Cafe at No. 69.
Local tip: Have your coffee on Ke Nou Street by day and come back after dark, when the same blocks turn into the Bassac Quarter and Street 9 has live music.4
