Boeung Keng Kang I is one of seven quarters in Khan Boeng Keng Kang, the district formed in January 2019 from part of Chamkar Mon.1 Streets 278 and 282 are its restaurant and bar strip, and the hostels around them make up the BKK1 backpackers district.2

Chains arrived early. Culture Trip found coffee shops on almost every corner of BKK1, from the local Brown Coffee and Bakery to Starbucks, Costa Coffee and Gloria Jean's Coffees.3 Thai-owned Doi Chaang, which uses single-origin coffee grown by Thailand's hill tribes, has a branch here too.4 Independent cafés fill the gaps on Pasteur Street (51), Street 63 and the short cross streets 334, 352 and 360.

Local tip: BKK1's café streets are a few blocks apart, so walk between them: Pasteur Street, Street 63 and Streets 334 to 360 are quicker on foot than in a tuk-tuk at rush hour.

The Independence Monument

On the quarter's northeast corner, the Independence Monument stands on the roundabout where Norodom and Sihanouk boulevards meet.5 Vann Molyvann designed the 37 m lotus-shaped stupa, begun in 1958 and opened in 1962 to mark independence from France in 1953.5

During national celebrations a royal or senior official lights a ceremonial flame on the pedestal inside, and flowers line the stairs; the Norodom Sihanouk Memorial, built in 2013, stands behind it.5

Pasteur Street and Street 63

Pasteur Street (51) runs the length of the quarter. Conekla Cafe is at No. 168, Temple Coffee n Bakery at No. 205A, Le Café at White Mansion at No. 26, and KIOSK Coffee and Eatery at the corner of Street 352. Temple Coffee n Bakery came from Siem Reap and has several branches in Phnom Penh.4

On Street 63 (Preah Trasak Paem), Noir Coffee BKK, Two Pi Coffee at No. 235 and UTBCAFE at No. 227a are close together. Noir is a local chain; its iced condensed-milk coffee is what locals tend to order.6

Streets 334, 352 and 360

The short cross streets hold the rest. On Street 334: Au Grain de cafe, FBC Gallery Cafe and Restaurant at No. 20, Thirty៦ Cafe at No. 24 and The Grounds at 27b. On Street 352: Brother coffee at No. 52, Celsius, The Leaf Coffee and Nest Cafe (សំបុកកាហ្វេ).

Streets 278 and 282 after dark

At night the quarter shifts to the bars of Streets 278 and 282, where Cupple Coffee at 23AB Street 278 and Lot 369 Cafe & Bar on Street 282 work both trades; Rainbow Ice at 159 Street 278 opens 09:30–20:30. The Russian Market is about 10–15 minutes away by road.7

Phone and bag snatching happens in daylight, too, mostly targeting women; on a tuk-tuk, keep your phone and bag toward the middle of the seat.2
