Daun Penh is the commercial heart of Phnom Penh: 7.44 km² on the Tonlé Sap, with 155,069 residents in 2019, and home to the Central Market, Wat Phnom and the Royal Palace.1 The legend behind the city's name starts here: in 1372, Lady Penh is said to have raised a hill on the west bank for Buddha statues she found floating in the river, and the shrine on top became Wat Phnom.2
Its cafés are spread across a dense grid of shophouse streets. Pasteur Street (51) has the tightest cluster, with Bodhi Café, DANTA Coffee, Le PKA, Library coffee and Cafe 4 U, and Streets 200, 228 and 242 hold several more.
Local tip: Climb Wat Phnom when it opens at 07:00, before the heat, then walk the few blocks to Street 102 for breakfast at Cam Cup Café.4

Wat Phnom and the old post office square
Wat Phnom rises 46 m in all; the sanctuary was rebuilt several times in the 19th century and again in 1926.3 The temple is at Norodom Boulevard and Street 94 and is open 07:00–18:30.4
East of the hill, the Central Post Office opened in 1895 at the corner of Streets 13 and 102, one of a group of buildings in the French administrative district set around a square, the Place de la Poste.5 Café de Phnom Penh and Cam Cup Café are both on Street 102, and Cam Cup serves from 06:00 to 20:00.
The Central Market
Phsar Thom Thmei (ផ្សារធំថ្មី, New Grand Market) was built on drained marshland in what was then the city's Chinatown and opened in September 1937.6 Jean Desbois designed the yellow building, with a 26 m central dome and four arched arms; a US$4.2 million renovation funded by the French Development Agency ran from 2009 to 2011.6
The marsh still shows in the wet season, when the market is prone to flooding.6 DAEM CAFÉ Express is at 45-47 Street 118 on the corner of Street 61, Decaf Coffee 118 at No. 164 on the same street, and 53 Central Coffee and Restaurant at 60 Calmette Street (53).
Specialty bars on Streets 228 and 242
Kuro Specialty Coffee is at 19 Street 228, with Haber Cafe at No. 17 and Samonda on the corner of Street 63. Uroast Bean (យូរ៉ូស ប៊ីន) is at 9 Street 242, near Rosemary Bakery Cafe at 16AE0, and Blue Espresso Bar is at 128 Street 63, by its junction with Street 240. On Street 200, Damnak Coffee, Express'O and Prim coffee are within a block of each other.
Western-style cafés cluster around the Royal Palace, in BKK1 and in Toul Tom Poung, and a growing affluent Khmer clientele now fills them alongside foreigners.7 Endless Cafe at 65 Street 240 and Tech Cafe on Street 184 are two of the Daun Penh cafés with Wi-Fi.
Early and late hours
Coffee starts at dawn here. Srey Pov Coffee Shop on Street 86 serves from 06:00 to 16:00, and Aun Café and Kafe Drip at 144 Street 59 open at 06:30. M Cafe on Wat Koh Street never closes, while Coffee Revolution on Street 252 keeps office hours, 08:00–17:00.
As of 2026, a motodop (motorbike taxi) from Sisowath Quay to the Central Market costs about 2,000 riel; fares rise at night and with a second passenger.4
