A boulangerie-café (bakery café) sells bread or pastry and has seats and coffee to go with it; its sweeter cousin is the pâtisserie (pastry shop). Montreal’s own bread is the bagel, boiled in honey-sweetened water and, in the traditional shops, always baked in a wood-fired oven.1 Fairmount Bagel dates from 1919 and St-Viateur Bagel from 1957.1
Le Plateau-Mont-Royal has the most bakery cafés, with the Quartier Latin & Le Village close behind and Centre-ville third; together they account for about three in four. Rue Ontario Est explains the Village’s showing: Hinnawi Bros. at 366, Par amour pâtisserie-café at 1336, Chat l’heureux at 1374, Java Café at 1871, Modali Café at 2267 and Café la Ligne Verte at 2531 are all on it.
Local tip: Café Dei Campi opens only Friday to Sunday, 10:00–16:00, and hands out pre-orders in the same window, so order ahead if you want a weekend box of cornetti.4
Where these cafés are: Plateau-Mont-Royal (9), Quartier Latin & Le Village (8), Centre-ville (6), Petite-Italie & La Petite-Patrie (3), Mile End (3), Westmount (1), Saint-Henri (1), Villeray & Parc-Extension (1).
