Christianshavn was founded in 1639 as a privileged merchant town on the Dutch model and was part of Copenhagen by 1674; the Christianshavn Canal splits it from north to south.1 Torvegade, the main street, crosses Knippelsbro to the center, and Christianshavn station, on Christianshavns Torv, serves metro lines M1 and M2.1 About 10,000 people live in its 3.4 km².1
Refshaleøen, to the northeast, was the Burmeister & Wain shipyard from 1871 until 1996, employing about 8,000 people at its peak.2 Its halls now hold workshops, venues and Reffen, a street-food market open since May 2018; the B&W Hallerne hosted the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest, and the Copenhell festival is held on the island.2 Refshalevej has the most cafés in the area, with La Banchina at No. 141, Toll Havs at No. 151, Hart at No. 159A and Lille Bakery at No. 213A.
Local tip: Take harbour bus 991 or 992 to the Refshaleøen stop and walk along Refshalevej, where La Banchina, Hart and Lille Bakery share one road.3

The metro covers old Christianshavn. Refshaleøen is easiest by water: harbour buses 991 and 992 stop at Refshaleøen, Holmen North and the Opera House on their way to Nyhavn, and take the same tickets as buses and the metro.3
On foot or by bike, Inderhavnsbroen, opened on 7 July 2016, crosses from Nyhavn to Christianshavn for walkers and cyclists only.4
On Overgaden Oven Vandet, the canal street, Café Oven Vande at No. 44 has tables outside and Sofiekælderen is at No. 32A; The Packhouse, on Overgaden Neden Vandet, opens at 08:00 on weekdays and 09:00 at weekends. Parterre opens at 07:00 on weekdays, as early as anywhere in the area.
The Church of Our Saviour, at Sankt Annæ Gade 29, has a 90 m spire finished in 1752; of its 400 steps, the last 150 wind round the outside.5 Les Amis is down the same street at No. 3, and Christianshavns Beboerhus, the neighborhood community house on Dronningensgade, has its own café. Cafe Rabes Have opens Wednesday to Sunday, 11:00–16:00.
Freetown Christiania was declared open on 26 September 1971 on the former Bådsmandsstræde barracks and covers about 7.7 hectares, home to 850–1,000 people.6 In 2024 police and most residents shut down the bulk of the cannabis trade on Pusher Street, and the street was dug up.6
Its cafés include Månefiskeren in the Fabriksområdet, open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, Café Nemoland nearby, and Abegrotten, open from 09:00 every day except Tuesday.
Lille Bakery works only with Danish grains, seeds and salts, and its counter carries seasonal spandauer, custard pastries topped with fruit such as rhubarb.7 It opens Wednesday to Sunday 08:00–17:00. Hart opens daily 07:30–17:00, and La Banchina from 08:00 every day, until 20:00 Thursday to Saturday.
Papirøen, officially Christiansholm, took its nickname from the newspaper publishers' purchasing association based there from 1958; its street-food lease ended in 2017.8 Prolog's bar there opens at 07:00 on weekdays. On Holmen, three small islands of old military buildings and new housing, Café Væksthuset in the Opera Park serves until 23:00 daily.1
