Frederiksberg is not part of Copenhagen Municipality. It is an independent municipality with its own mayor and council, entirely surrounded by the capital, and the most densely populated in Denmark.1 Its name comes from Frederichs Berg, the palace Frederik IV built on Valby Bakke in 1700–1703.1 The town's population peaked at about 120,000 around 1950, and Copenhagen Zoo, widely thought of as a Copenhagen sight, is in fact on Frederiksberg land.1
Cafés follow its main shopping streets, Gammel Kongevej, Godthåbsvej and Falkoner Allé.1 Godthåbsvej has the most, and Frederiksberg Allé, the traditional finish of the Danmark Rundt cycle race, comes next.1 Coffee Collective's shop at Godthåbsvej 34B was, in 2016, also its roastery, office and training base, with a menu built around black filter coffee.2
Local tip: Start at Café Funder on Frederiksberg Runddel, open daily from 10:00, then walk into the park to the 1803 Chinese Pavilion on its island.5

Getting to Frederiksberg
Seven metro stations serve the municipality, among them Forum, Fasanvej and Flintholm.1 The M3 City Circle Line stops at Aksel Møllers Have, Frederiksberg and Frederiksberg Allé.3
Gammel Kongevej starts at Vesterport station, at the southern end of the Lakes, and runs about 1.8 km west to Frederiksberg's city hall square, where it continues as Smallegade.4
Frederiksberg Have and the palace
Frederik IV laid out Frederiksberg Have beside his summer palace in 1699. In the 1790s it was remade as an English-style landscape garden with winding paths, lakes and canals, and the Chinese Pavilion on its small island was finished in 1803.5 The park covers about 31.7 hectares, and since Norman Foster's elephant house for the neighboring zoo replaced a wall with a fence, walkers can watch the elephants.5
Café Funder, on Frederiksberg Runddel, opens daily 10:00–17:00, and Bakkehusets Orangeri, on Rahbeks Alle, has outdoor tables.
Gammel Kongevej
Gammel Kongevej, the Old King's Road, took its name after Frederiksberg Allé opened in 1705, and most of its apartment blocks with shops on the ground floor date from the 1880s and 1890s.4
At No. 107, Harlo & Meyer opens at 07:00 and, from Wednesday to Saturday, reopens in the evening until 23:00; Botti shares the address and serves until 23:00 on the same nights. Casita is at No. 85, open from 08:00 Tuesday to Friday.
Frederiksberg Allé, opened in 1705, has Sonny at No. 12, Den go’e kaffebar at No. 42A, open from 07:30 on weekdays, and Olivers Oase at No. 69, which serves brunch daily 08:00–18:00.4
Bakeries and coffee on Falkoner Allé and Godthåbsvej
BUKA's Frederiksberg bakery, at Falkoner Alle 26B, opens daily at 07:00. In January 2024 BUKA, which then had four Copenhagen shops, charged 45–52 kr. for its fastelavnsboller (Shrovetide cream buns).6 Malthe P Café, at Falkoner Alle 38, also opens at 07:00 on weekdays and serves brunch.
On Godthåbsvej, Aurens Deli is at No. 35 and Mad og Kaffe at No. 45, open daily until 21:00; Vores Marked is at No. 32B, near Coffee Collective at No. 34B. For the evening, Cafe MØS on Andebakkesti and Lorraine stay open until midnight on several nights a week.
