In Copenhagen a café is often a café-bar: coffee and breakfast in the morning, beer, wine and music at night. The model is younger than it looks. Café Sommersko opened on Kronprinsensgade on 11 June 1976 as the first café of a Parisian kind in the Nordic countries, started by an artist and two brothers who felt artists had nowhere to meet.1

It soon drew Copenhageners of every sort, survived a bankruptcy in 2010 and closed in August 2017; a new café with the same name opened on Palægade in 2024.1 The new Sommersko is at Palægade 6, in Frederiksstaden.

Local tip: During the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, check Cafe Bopa's program: its concerts on Bopa Plads cost nothing, and the café pours until 02:30 on Fridays and Saturdays.2

Café-bars that change after dark

Cafe Bopa, at Løgstørgade 8 in Østerbro, opened in December 1998, holds about 150 people and turns lively at night with rotating DJs and live music. Every summer it hosts Copenhagen Jazz Festival concerts, and those inside or out on Bopa Plads are free.2 It pours until 02:30 on Friday and Saturday nights.

Café Dyrehaven, on Sønder Boulevard in Vesterbro, mixes an old pub's interior with a younger, modern style.3 It stays open until midnight on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and until 01:00 on Thursdays. Across the harbor, Cafe Alma on Islands Brygge serves until 02:00 on Fridays and until midnight on the other nights.

Late hours by neighborhood

Indre By has the most cafés open into the night, followed by Nørrebro. Wanna B, at Kompagnistræde 4, serves until 02:00 from Thursday to Saturday; Beau Marché Cafe & Vin, on Ny Østergade, until midnight Monday to Saturday; and Zirup until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Café G stays open until 23:00 Monday to Thursday.

In Nørrebro, Oberra on Skjolds Plads serves until midnight from Thursday to Saturday, and Tilda & Karl on Stefansgade until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, though it closes at 17:00 on Mondays and Tuesdays. In Valby, Bastard Café's branch on Valgårdsvej runs until 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and Sommerfuglen, on Valby Langgade, until 23:00 on the same nights.

In Frederiksberg, Lau's serves until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and Maude's until 22:00 on most nights. Up in Nordvest, Cafe Bjerget on Bispebjerg Torv keeps late hours on Fridays only, staying open until midnight, and otherwise closes at 18:00.

Coffee and bread after dark

Rug, the bakery inside the Villa Copenhagen hotel on Tietgensgade, has also opened in the evening since 7 February 2025, as the hotel's main restaurant with natural wines and cocktails.4

Mo'Joe, on Gothersgade, covers both ends of the day: it opens at 07:30 on weekdays and closes at 23:00 Monday to Thursday and at midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Getting home after midnight

The metro runs around the clock. Outside Thursday to Saturday nights, trains run every 20 minutes on all sections overnight.5

Terraces close before the rooms behind them: outside the trial squares, outdoor serving normally ends at 24:00 even where the bar inside keeps going, and the chairs must be stacked within half an hour.6
