Nørrebro lies northwest of the center, across the Lakes. Until 1852 it was countryside; when the city lifted its building limits beyond the old Northern Gate, thousands of workers moved in.1 Nørrebrogade, the main street, reaches the center over Dronning Louises Bro (Queen Louise's Bridge), which separates Sortedams Sø from Peblinge Sø.2 Assistens Kirkegård, the district's cemetery, holds the graves of Hans Christian Andersen, Søren Kierkegaard and Niels Bohr.1

For coffee, this is where the light-roast bars started. Coffee Collective's first café opened on Jægersborggade in February 2008, and the company describes that shop as its original, since moved to a larger space on the same street.34 Nørrebrogade has more cafés than any other street in the district, from Andersen og Maillard at No. 62 to Waynes coffee at No. 230, which opens at 07:00 on weekdays.

Local tip: For coffee with a lake view, Kaffesalonen on Peblinge Dossering opens at 08:00 on weekdays and 10:00 at weekends, and keeps serving until midnight.

Jægersborggade

Jægersborggade is a cobbled street of speculative housing built around 1900, with the last buildings finished in 1928.6 Almost all of its small shops closed after the Second World War. In 1993 most of the properties passed to the housing association AB Jæger, and a revival plan launched in 2001 filled the old basement storerooms with more than 40 specialty shops, coffee bars, restaurants and delis.6

Coffee Collective's Jægersborggade bar, now at No. 57, opens 07:00–20:00 on weekdays and 08:00–19:00 at weekends.4 The Sixteen Twelve, at No. 8, serves brunch from 08:00 on Saturdays and Sundays.
