Østerbro lies northeast of the center, outside the old eastern gate, Østerport, and stretches east to the Øresund; it has long been one of Copenhagen's wealthier districts.1 Fælledparken, laid out between 1906 and 1914 by landscape architect Edvard Glæsel, sits beside Parken, the national stadium.2

Cafés follow the shopping streets: Ryesgade, Østerbrogade, Nordre Frihavnsgade and Århusgade, plus the squares around Trianglen. Copenhagen Coffee Lab on Sankt Kjelds Plads opens at 07:00 every day and Prolog's bar at Randersgade 45 at 07:00 on weekdays, the earliest starts in the district.

Local tip: Cafe Livingstone on Sortedam Dossering opens at 08:00 on Saturdays and Sundays, an hour earlier than on weekdays.

Bopa Plads is named after the mint-green building at Løgstørgade 8, built in 1885, where the wartime sabotage group BOPA is believed to have had its headquarters. The square got the name only in 1995, for the 50th anniversary of the end of the German occupation.5 Cars were banned from it in 1975–1977, and it now has a playground and a pétanque court.5

Sortedam Dossering runs along Sortedams Sø, the northernmost lake, dug as part of the city's fortifications after the siege of 1523.7 Cafe Livingstone at No. 81 stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, and Den Franske Cafe is at No. 101.
