Vesterbro begins where Copenhagen's western gate, Vesterport, stood until it was pulled down in 1856. Once building outside the fortifications was allowed, the population jumped from 7,260 in 1860 to 24,790 in 1880.1 Vesterbrogade is the main street and Istedgade, to the south, the nightlife street; a long urban-renewal program in the district ended in 2017.1
Coffee here centers on Kødbyen, the former meatpacking district between the railway into Copenhagen Central Station and Sønder Boulevard.2 Prolog opened there in spring 2016 on Høkerboderne, inside a magazine shop, and roasts its own coffee.3 It opens at 07:00 on weekdays, as do Nachbar on Martin Luther Kings Vej and Orsa Coffee at Vesterbrogade 46.
Local tip: Prolog in Kødbyen has little more than bar stools and a window seat, and they fill fast.3 On weekdays it opens at 07:00, two hours earlier than at weekends.

Copenhagen Central Station (København H) is on the district's edge, and the M3 City Circle Line runs from there to Enghave Plads and Frederiksberg Allé.4 Enghave Plads is both a square and a metro stop, in the Kongens Enghave end of the district.1
On Vesterbrogade, Buna & Co. at No. 108 opens daily 08:00–18:30, and Sort Kaffe og Vinyl on Skydebanegade opens at 08:00 on weekdays.
A cattle market opened on the site on 28 November 1879 and slaughterhouses followed from 1883. City architect Poul Holsøe planned a single meat district from 1928, and the White Kødby, a 400 × 600 m enclave of white modernist blocks, went up in 1934.2 Meat firms still work in the White Kødby, while the Brown Kødby has turned since about 2000 into galleries, art cafés, studios and nightlife.2
At Prolog, the drink to know is the coffee shot: a long shot pulled with filter-roast beans, strong enough that co-founder Jonas Gehl didn't recommend it as a first order.3
Sønder Boulevard has been a green strip with ball courts and ping-pong tables since a full makeover in 2007.5 Café Dyrehaven, at No. 72, pairs a pub-like room with pavement tables that fill in sunny weather; it opens at 07:30 on weekdays and closes at 02:00 on Fridays.5 Mad & Kaffe, at No. 68, has been in Vesterbro since 2015 and has added branches in Amager and Frederiksberg.5
Istedgade ties Vesterbrogade for the most cafés of any Vesterbro street: Coffee Minor at No. 58, Kaffe at No. 90, open until 22:00 every day, and Byens Bogcafé, a book café at No. 102. On Enghave Plads, Kaffeslabberasen opens at 07:00 on weekdays and Navnløs Kaffe & Bar runs from 07:30 until 02:00 on Fridays.
Værnedamsvej, on the Frederiksberg border, takes its name from Werner Dam, who ran a beer garden there before 1733, and was once called Slagtergaden (Butchers' Street).6 Its food shops have largely given way to fashion boutiques and cafés; Italo Caffé at No. 10 opens daily at 08:00.6
In Carlsberg Byen, Coffee Collective has a bar on Fadet.7 Københavns Bageri at Flaskehalsen 22 opens at 07:00 on weekdays; in May 2023 a slice of its kringle (a pastry ring) cost 40 kr. and a whole one 300 kr.8
