Gerland is the southern part of the 7th arrondissement along the Rhône, about 7 km², once known as La Mouche.1 Tony Garnier designed its slaughterhouses in 1909–1914; only the great hall survives, as the Halle Tony-Garnier, and he built the Stade de Gerland in 1920.1

Research moved in from the 1980s: the ENS de Lyon arrived from Saint-Cloud in 1987, Inserm's P4 laboratory in 1999, and the Biodistrict Lyon-Gerland now groups Sanofi Pasteur, bioMérieux and other life-science firms.1 Cafés are thickest at the northern end, around Jean Macé, Rue Chevreul and Rue de Marseille.

Local tip: Check Magma's guest roaster before you go: it changes every month, and the V60 is the way to taste it.3
