Lyon still drinks some of its coffee at the zinc, the metal-topped bar counter. At Café de la Cloche, near Bellecour, Folliet coffee is poured at a counter in a room of old paneling and banquettes that has barely changed since the 1930s.6 Across the Rhône, the café at 23 Quai Victor Augagneur keeps a room of woodwork and painted ceramic views of the city, listed as a historic monument in December 1984.7
Specialty coffee came through local roasters. Robin Perraud founded Slake in 2015 after mornings built around flat whites in New Zealand, and Fika roasts for a large wholesale list of Lyon cafés, restaurants and bars.1 Mokxa opened a garden café with a coffee school on the Croix-Rousse in 2021, and its former headquarters on the Pentes reopened in 2023 as La Boîte à Café, run by new owners.12 Sãba has served organic specialty coffee since 2017.4
Several roasters sell from their own counters. Jaune Cerise roasts every day on the Grande Rue de la Croix-Rousse, continuing a business that Patrick Callegher started in 1987.3 Mill Factory, in Vieux Lyon, is a pastry shop and micro-roaster in one.5 In Monplaisir, Café Lumière faces the Hangar du Premier-Film at the Institut Lumière, with a shaded terrace.8
Lyon is divided into nine arrondissements, but people place a café by its quartier (neighborhood).16 The Presqu'île and the Pentes, between the Saône and the Rhône, have the old zincs and the densest run of specialty bars; Vieux Lyon lies across the Saône under Fourvière; the left bank runs from the Brotteaux through Part-Dieu and La Guillotière to Gerland.

Renaissance streets under Fourvière: Rue du Bœuf, Place du Change and a pastry shop that roasts.

Ask for un café and you get a small black espresso; milk and sugar come only on request. An allongé is the same coffee lengthened with water, a noisette (hazelnut, for the color) adds a little foamed milk, and a café crème is a large cup with hot milk, larger still as a grand crème.12 Café au lait is a home word that a waiter reads as a crème, and un déca is decaf.12
Where you drink sets the price. Cafés must post the counter and table prices of their most common drinks, a black coffee among them, where they can be read from the street, in letters at least 1.5 cm high, and repeat the board inside.13 If service is included, the board has to say prix service compris and give the percentage.13
Because service is built into French prices, a tip is neither required nor expected; on a small bill people round up to the next euro.14 Specialty bars set their own rules on laptops: Slake welcomes them on weekdays while there is room, limits them at lunch and brunch, and keeps weekends screen-free.15

An espresso cost €1.80 on Café Lumière's November 2025 drinks list and €2 at Slake in 2026. A grand crème or cappuccino runs €4–4.20, filter coffee €4–5 at Slake, and the Vietnamese phin coffee at Môt Chút in La Guillotière cost €4 in 2025. Cafés post the counter and table price of a black coffee outside, so check the board before you sit down.
Presqu'île and Terreaux & Les Pentes have the most cafés, followed by Part-Dieu & Préfecture. The Pentes have the most specialty coffee bars, around Rue de la Platière, Rue Paul Chenavard and Place du Griffon, while Part-Dieu has the earliest openers, from 06:00 at the station.
Un café is a small black espresso, served without milk or sugar unless you ask. An allongé adds water, a noisette adds a little foamed milk, and a café crème is a large coffee with hot milk; a grand crème is the bigger cup. Café au lait is understood as a crème, and un déca is decaf.
Jaune Cerise roasts every day on the Grande Rue de la Croix-Rousse, in a business that goes back to 1987. Mill Factory in Vieux Lyon roasts its own specialty beans alongside its pastries, and Fika roasts for a long list of Lyon cafés and restaurants. Mokxa runs a garden café with a coffee school on the Croix-Rousse.
There is no need to. Service is included in French café prices, and a price board that includes it must say prix service compris with the percentage. Tipping is neither required nor expected; on a small bill people round up to the next euro.
It depends on the café. Slake, a specialty bar with two Lyon addresses, allows laptops on weekdays while there is room, limits them at lunch and brunch, and keeps weekends screen-free. Ask before you open a laptop, especially at weekends.
