Free Wi-Fi in a French café carries a legal duty for the owner. According to the CNIL, France's data-protection authority, a café that offers internet access must keep technical connection data, such as IP addresses and device identifiers, for one year.1 It is not required in principle to record who its customers are, so an open network with no sign-up is lawful; a café that chooses to collect names must keep them for five years.1
Terreaux & Les Pentes hold about two in five of the city's Wi-Fi cafés, far ahead of La Guillotière, Jean Macé and Part-Dieu. Across the left bank they come in ones and twos, spread from Rue Béchevelin to Avenue des Frères Lumière.
