The Presqu'île is the tongue of land between the Saône and the Rhône, which meet south of the historic center.8 At its middle lies Place Bellecour, 300 m long and 62,400 m² in all, with François-Frédéric Lemot's equestrian Louis XIV, installed in 1825; it is often called the largest pedestrian square in Europe.1

North of Bellecour, the streets around the Cordeliers and the Jacobins hold brasseries, chain coffee shops and a few specialty bars. South of it, toward Ainay, the cafés turn into tea rooms and pastry counters: Café Mademoiselle, Café bourbon, Casita Café and Little - Petits Gateaux sit within a short stretch of Rue des Remparts d'Ainay.

Local tip: Come early on a Sunday: the Quai Saint-Antoine market runs until 14:00 with its full 121 traders, and Bistrot de la passerelle is already serving at 06:30.7

The Buvette Saint-Antoine, an open-air bar on Quai des Célestins looking across to Fourvière, burned in the early hours of 11 May 2025 and reopened on 1 August that year.6 Buvette Bonaparte, a little upriver, also seats people outdoors. For coffee before the market, Bistrot de la passerelle opens at 06:30 Tuesday to Sunday, and Le P'tit Vert on Rue Ferrandière opens at 07:00 on weekdays.

Getting around the Presqu'île

Bellecour station, opened on line A in 1978 and enlarged in 1991 for line D, is the busiest on the Lyon metro.1 The center is flat and walkable: Café des Jacobins is on Place des Jacobins, Café du XXe siècle on Rue Grenette, and Rue Mercière and Rue Ferrandière are a few steps away.

Some cafés keep office hours. Café Le Simone on Rue Vaubecour opens weekdays only, 09:30–19:30, and Le Dandelion on Rue de Condé closes at 17:00 on weekdays and 16:00 on Saturdays.
