The Altstadt runs from the Viktualienmarkt and Marienplatz to the Residenz and Odeonsplatz, and its coffee comes in every register. You can drink a cup standing at a market stall, eat cake in the Palmengarten of Café Luitpold, or take a window table on the fifth floor of Café Glockenspiel, which looks onto the Neues Rathaus and the Alter Peter.1

Dallmayr on Dienerstraße is the old town's coffee name. Therese and Anton Randlkofer bought the delicatessen from Alois Dallmayr in 1895, coffee has been roasted under the name since 1931, and about 3.5 million people a year visit the Stammhaus, which includes the Café Bistro Dallmayr.2

Local tip: For a window seat facing the Glockenspiel at Café Glockenspiel on Marienplatz, reserve online or by phone at least ten days ahead.8

Coffee chains in Altstadt

The Viktualienmarkt before 08:00

"Viktualien" is an old word for food, a 19th-century Latinism that replaced the plainer "green market". Today the market covers 22,000 square meters with about 140 stalls, and the beer at its beer garden rotates every five or six weeks so that no Munich brewery is favored.3

The day starts at Karnoll's Back- und Kaffeestandl, run by Tamara Karnoll, who took it over from her father; the stall has existed since 1974. She unlocks at 04:30 to bake the first pretzels and pours the first coffee around 06:00, with bistro tables on one side of the stand.3

Two stalls take coffee and baking further. The Kaffeerösterei Viktualienmarkt, in section III, drum-roasts its beans and pairs them with Alpine milk from 07:30.4 Lea Zapf bakes in a nine-square-meter kitchen at her stand, mixing French and German recipes with eggs from Eching and flour from the Hofbräuhaus-Kunstmühle.5

Schmalznudeln at Café Frischhut

Café Frischhut on Prälat-Zistl-Straße 8 has served baked goods since 1973. Its signature is the Schmalznudel, yeast dough fried crisp in hot lard and known in Bavarian as Auszogne, served with coffee in cups lettered in old German script.6

Locals simply call the place "die Schmalznudel". In the 1970s clubbers came for coffee and a ring of fried dough when the clubs closed around 04:00; the clubs have since moved to Sonnenstraße and the Ostbahnhof, but five kinds still come out of the machines, among them Rohrnudeln, Auszogne and braided Striezel.3

Odeonsplatz: Tambosi and Luitpold

Tambosi's ground-floor coffeehouse opens at 08:00 and closes at 01:00, or 03:00 on Fridays and Saturdays; the tables in the Hofgarten run from 12:00 to 23:00 and can be booked, but the terrace toward the Feldherrnhalle cannot.7 Nearby, Café am Salvatorplatz opens at 07:00 from Monday to Friday.

Around the corner, Café Luitpold on Brienner Straße was one of the largest coffeehouses in Europe when it opened, and Frank Wedekind, Stefan George and members of the Blauer Reiter group were regulars.1 In the same building at Brienner Straße 11, the EspressoBar by BalanDeli opens at 08:00 on weekdays.

Espresso bars and roasters near Marienplatz

Bar Centrale at Ledererstraße 23 opens at 07:30 on weekdays and stays open until 01:00 from Thursday to Saturday. The Barn has a branch at Hochbrückenstraße 4, open daily 08:00–18:00, and Man versus Machine has a bar at Marienplatz 8. Rösterei am Platzl on Orlandostraße opens at 08:00 on weekdays.

Kanso Coffee Lab on Theatinerstraße and Vee's Kaffee & Bohnen on Rindermarkt cover the shopping streets, and Meyerbeer Coffee next door on Rindermarkt opens at 07:30 on weekdays. Café Glockenspiel, above Marienplatz, serves breakfast until 15:30.8
