The Sendlinger Tor, built in 1320, pointed the way south to Sendling, and Lindwurmstraße still leads into the quarter. From the 18th century the village took on a suburban character; factories such as Siemens and tobacco makers brought workers' housing, and Sendling joined Munich in 1877.1

It splits into Untersendling, Mittersendling and Obersendling. The Großmarkthalle, opened in 1912, is Europe's third-largest food hub and supplies about five million people, and the Stemmerhof, first recorded in 1382, was Munich's last working farm until the early 1990s; it now holds 25 shops.1

Local tip: The Gans am Wasser in the Westpark is open all year; its Christmas market is small and its concerts ask for a donation, not a ticket.6

Harras and Plinganserstraße

Harras is the quarter's transport hub, where S-Bahn, U-Bahn, buses and some regional trains meet.2 With its shops, practices and café terraces, the square works like a small town center.1

Café Schuntner at Plinganserstraße 10 serves a different lunch menu every day and opens at 09:00 from Tuesday to Sunday.3 Cafe Grass at number 36 opens at 08:30 on weekdays, Café Ora at number 6 at 08:00, and Covolino on Passauerstraße at 06:00.

Further south, Café Distl on Distlhofweg opens at 06:30 on weekdays and Crumbs & Kisses on Senserstraße at 08:00, while idilio on Zielstattstraße stays open until 22:00 every day.

Vietnamese coffee and Australian cake

The Annamites Coffee Roasters on Fallstraße 26 brings Vietnamese coffee to Sendling: egg coffee, coconut latte, phin coffee dripped through a metal filter, and a stronger Saigon coffee.4 It opens at 08:00 from Tuesday to Sunday.

Lamingtons at Passauerstraße 45 opens at 07:30 from Tuesday to Saturday and serves breakfast. Calima Specialty Coffee on Nestroystraße opens at 08:00 from Wednesday to Friday, and Pacandé on Implerstraße roasts microlots it imports directly from single farms.5

The Westpark

The Westpark was finished for the International Garden Exhibition of 1983, which showed 23 national gardens. The Thai sala on the lake held Europe's first freestanding Buddha shrine, the Japanese garden was a gift from Munich's twin city Sapporo, and 300 craftsmen in Nepal carved the pagoda.6

In 2016 the Gans am Wasser, a café in construction trailers, replaced the old 1980s park café by the lake. It is open all year, bakes its own cakes, serves vegetarian and vegan snacks, and holds concerts with donation-based entry.6

Down by the Isar

The Flaucher, the Isar meadows of Mittersendling, is popular in summer because barbecues are allowed and swimming is easy, with a beer garden among the trees.1 Kiosk 1917 on Tierparkstraße opens daily 10:00–18:00.

Only trade customers may shop at the Großmarkthalle, whose 310,000 square meters handle more than 600,000 tonnes of food a year; after wartime bombing, only Hall I survives in its original state.1 Behind the Stemmerhof, the Stemmerwiese is a meadow for picnics and sunbathing.1

At night, Cafe BLUe on Implerstraße serves until 01:00 every day, and Carpe Diem on Pfeuferstraße stays open until 05:00 from Monday to Saturday, the start of Bavaria's statutory closing hour.
