Munich's coffeehouse history starts at the Hofgarten. The café that still carries the name of Luigi Tambosi was founded there in 1775, and its terrace looking onto the Feldherrnhalle and Odeonsplatz is often called the city's best-known sun terrace.1 Sixty years later the habit had spread: a café guide published in 1835 already counted 40 coffee addresses in the city.2

The south shows in the cup. Munich's tourist office notes that roasts here run darker than in Hamburg or Berlin and that, with Italy close by, people drink more espresso, while the north takes more milk.2 Italian café-bars such as Bar Centrale on Ledererstraße stand next to the traditional coffeehouses of the old town.3

The specialty scene is smaller than Berlin's but serious about quality.4 Two of its best-known names share a block in the Glockenbachviertel: The Barn serves coffee roasted in Berlin at Müllerstraße 38, a few doors from Man Versus Machine at number 23.4 In Neuhausen, SALLIS began in July 2011 as a shop selling beans from small German roasters and now drum-roasts its own coffee on Donnersbergerstraße.5

Munich by area

Munich calls its neighborhoods Viertel. The Maxvorstadt is the product of the city's first planned expansion, decided in 1808, with a grid of streets laid out by Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell; Haidhausen, first recorded around 808, is older than Munich itself.1516

How coffee works in Munich

Traditional menus sell filter coffee by size: a Tasse (cup), a Haferl (the Bavarian word for a big mug) and a Kännchen (pot). Café Arzmiller on Odeonsplatz lists all three, next to the Wiener Melange, a Viennese milk coffee, and the Swiss Schümli.6 In specialty bars you order as anywhere else: espresso, cappuccino, flat white or a filter of the day.

Breakfast is an outing, and the Weißwurst has its own rule: by tradition it must not hear the noon bells. The Verbraucherzentrale Bayern explains that butchers once sold the veal sausages raw in the morning; today they come precooked and chilled, yet a late-morning Weißwurst with a Breze (pretzel) and sweet mustard is still the Bavarian custom.7

Service is not added to the bill. Round up, or add up to about 10 percent, and name the total you want to pay as you hand over the money; staff will otherwise count out every cent of change.8 A table is yours until you leave, though it is polite to order another round if you stay to talk.8

Bavaria's only statutory closing hour for cafés and bars runs from 05:00 to 06:00, and it is lifted on the night before 1 January.9 Terraces close earlier: outdoor seating on public ground may be used from 06:00 to 23:00, and from April to September the city can allow midnight on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of holidays.10 Tambosi on Odeonsplatz serves until 03:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.11
