The Westend was barely inhabited until the early 19th century. Factories came with industrialization after 1850, and with them workers, first from the Bavarian countryside and later from abroad; locals long called it the "Glasscherbenviertel" (broken-glass quarter), and today people of up to 25 nationalities live here.1

When the trade fair moved east in 1998, a new residential quarter grew around the Bavariapark on the Schwanthalerhöhe.1 Augustiner, Munich's oldest brewery, has brewed in the Westend for 130 years, and the Hackerbrücke, a 19th-century iron bridge, links it with the Hauptbahnhof.1

Local tip: Everything you sit on at Café Marais has a price: the chairs and tables, collected from between 1900 and 1960, can be bought.1

Coffee chains in Westend

Café Marais on Parkstraße

Café Marais opened in 2006 in a former textile shop at Parkstraße 2 and kept its 1920s counter and shelving with hundreds of small drawers.12 Almost everything in the room is for sale, including the mismatched chairs and tables from between 1900 and 1960.1

The breakfast menu sticks to classics such as Bircher muesli and Strammer Max (ham and fried egg on bread), and the house cakes are its trademark.2 It is closed on Mondays and opens at 08:00 from Tuesday to Saturday.

Kazmairstraße and Gollierstraße

Kazmairstraße was named in 1878 after Jörg Kazmair, a patrician who served several times as Munich's mayor.3 Café CaVa there is a mix of American diner and Viennese coffeehouse, and actors have been regulars or waited tables.3 The Westend's corners are often cut off, so small squares form at the crossings.4

On Gollierstraße, Munich's tourist office sends the lone newspaper reader to Café Gollier for a croissant and cappuccino.5 Stray Coffee at number 30 opens at 08:00 from Monday to Saturday, and Cafe Spatz at number 53 from Wednesday to Sunday.

Helmut Dietl had his Monaco Franze born in 1933 "where Kazmairstraße meets Ligsalzstraße", and the character borrowed many details from the life of the actor Helmut Fischer.3 On the Georg-Freundorfer-Platz next to the street, children climb a maze of tall posts, rope bridges and nets while older men play chess.3

Specialty coffee and early starts

Southbank Specialty Coffee on Guldeinstraße opens at 07:00 from Wednesday to Friday and at 09:00 at weekends. Mira on Heimeranstraße, a café and bakery, starts at 07:00 from Tuesday to Friday.

Newtonic Barista Bar on Ridlerstraße serves from 07:30 on weekdays, as does Café Nido on Anglerstraße, which stays open until 19:00. Oktoberfest weeks

The Oktoberfest takes over the Theresienwiese for about two weeks from mid-September to early October, and the music from the tents carries to the Bavaria statue above the meadow.1 Thousands cross the Hackerbrücke on their way in, many opening their first beer on the bridge.1

The Theresienwiese station on the U4 and U5 is the closest to the grounds.6 In good weather the large terrace of the Marais is a meeting point for the whole quarter.4
