Haidhausen was first recorded around 808 and is much older than the core of Munich. With the Au and Giesing it remained a suburb of day laborers, guest workers and people from the countryside, who dug gravel and clay, until all three were incorporated in the mid-19th century; restored Herbergshäuser, the lodging houses of the poor, still stand from that time.1
West of the Ostbahnhof, opened in 1871, the Franzosenviertel went up in the years after the Franco-Prussian War.1 Its streets are named for French battlefields such as Sedan, Balan, Lothringen and Belfort, not out of friendship, and round squares with fountains break up the dense blocks: Weißenburger Platz, Pariser Platz, Orleansplatz.2
Local tip: Twice a year Haidhausen holds back-courtyard flea markets (Hinterhof-Flohmärkte), the easiest way to see the green courtyards behind the facades.1

Wiener Platz and the Isar bluff
Wiener Platz takes its name from the old road to Vienna, and its market stalls sell vegetables, fish, wine and pastries, with tables outside for watching the square.1 Until Carl von Linde's refrigeration machine of 1876, more than 50 breweries kept their beer in cellars under the Isar bluff; chestnut trees were planted above them for shade, and the Munich beer garden was born.1
Café Wiener Platz, a few steps from the Bavarian Landtag, has kept a coffeehouse atmosphere for about four decades and serves a Wiener Melange.3 It is open daily 08:00 to midnight. On the square itself, the Saftstandl opens at 07:00 and Suuapinga has a stall from 08:00 on weekdays.
Around Weißenburger Platz
Ideal Espressobar at Weißenburger Straße 8 cooks a changing lunch every day without a fixed menu and serves eggs at breakfast with its own bread.4 It opens at 08:00 and stays open until 22:00 on weekdays. Café la Maison at number 6 and Cafe Batumi on Weißenburger Platz are next door.
Café im Hinterhof on Sedanstraße opens at 08:30 from Monday to Saturday and 09:00 on Sundays, with breakfast and its own cakes. Lottibar on Pariser Straße stays open until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and Chez Fritz on Preysingstraße until 01:00 from Tuesday to Saturday.
Preysingstraße and Wörthstraße
Preysingstraße feels like a village: its lodging houses survived the war, and the timbered Kriechbaumhof, built in the 17th century on Wolfgangstraße, was taken apart and rebuilt here in 1985.5 Sorry Johnny at number 42 opens at 07:30 every day, and Eiscafé Adamello at 29 stays open until 23:00.
Chocolatte on Wörthstraße has been a family bakery since 2004, run by the siblings Yurdi and Memo Balci; people from the neighborhood queue for its pretzels.6 Lollo Rosso at Wörthstraße 11 opens at 08:00 on weekdays.
The Werksviertel behind the Ostbahnhof
Pfanni made dumplings and mashed potato on this 39-hectare site until the mid-1990s; from 1996 the Kunstpark Ost and its clubs took over the halls. Today shipping containers on Atelierstraße 4 house shops, studios and bars, and WERK1 runs a founders' café and coworking space for start-ups.7
Alrighty, a coffee brand selling Caretrade coffee grown by young women farmers, roasts next to its café at Speicherstraße 28 and offers tours of the roastery.8 Back toward the Isar, the VogelMaier Kaffeerösterei is at Einsteinstraße 125, and M8 Specialty Coffee on Mühldorfstraße.
