"Schwabing is not a place but a state of mind," the writer Franziska zu Reventlow said of the bohemian quarter around 1900.1 Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter lived on Ainmillerstraße, and at Feilitzschstraße 32 Thomas Mann worked on Buddenbrooks between 1899 and 1902, in the same house as the editorial office of Simplicissimus.12

Leopoldstraße, a broad avenue of poplars, runs straight through Schwabing toward the Siegestor, lined with street cafés for watching cyclists and convertibles go by.1 To the east lies the Englischer Garten, 375 hectares stretching five and a half kilometers from the Isar meadows in the north to the Altstadt.3

Local tip: Take a coffee from the Milchhäusl on Königinstraße into the park; the U3 and U6 stop at Universität, close to the kiosk.8

Münchner Freiheit and Leopoldstraße

Café Münchner Freiheit at Münchner Freiheit 20 is family-run, bakes its own cakes and Krapfen, and has a large terrace.4 The actor Helmut Fischer, the "Monaco Franze" of 1980s television, has a statue in front of it, his favorite café.1 It opens daily at 07:00.

Mackbear Coffee at Leopoldstraße 44 stays open until 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Around the corner, Wedekindplatz was once the village square of Altschwabing; its crooked lamp recalls the bar "Bei Gisela", opened in 1952 by the singer known as the Schwabinger Gisela.2

Elisabethmarkt and Hohenzollernstraße

Standl 20 is a cabin among the stalls of the Elisabethmarkt, opened in May 2015 by Toni Lohde and Johannes Bayer. Bayer roasts the coffee as JB Kaffee, now in Dachau, and the hut offers two espressos and eleven filter coffees.5

Suuapinga on Herzogstraße 85, whose name refers to the old settlement of Schwabing, was founded by Peter Baumann, Lucas Wiltfang and Emanuel Etzersdorfer and serves cinnamon rolls and butter sandwiches with its coffee.5 It has five locations across the city.6 Man versus Machine has a branch at Hohenzollernstraße 32, and Ohana at number 40 opens daily at 08:00.

Coffee in the Englischer Garten

Elector Karl Theodor opened the former military garden to the public in 1789. There are four beer gardens inside, at the Aumeister, the Chinesischer Turm, the Hirschau and the Seehaus on the Kleinhesseloher See, and for something to carry there are kiosks such as the Milchhäusl.3

The Milchhäusl is a small organic kiosk at Königinstraße 6, opposite the university veterinary clinic, with the Universität stop of the U3 and U6 nearby.78 On the third Sunday in July, thousands in Tracht bring picnic baskets and candlesticks to the Chinesischer Turm for the early-morning Kocherlball.3 At the park's southern entrance, the Eisbach wave has been surfed in almost any weather for 40 years.3

Early openers

Schwabing gets up early. Tramezzini Stehcafe on Dietlindenstraße opens at 05:00 on weekdays, Gita's Café on Franz-Joseph-Straße at 06:00, and Cafe Franz on Agnesstraße and Morso on Kölner Platz at 07:00.

The Spirited Goat on Hohenzollernstraße starts at 07:00 on weekdays and 07:30 on Saturdays, Diatonic Kaffeeladen a few doors down at 07:15. For the evening, Café Scheidplatz on Belgradstraße is open until 23:00 and Tante Emma on Destouchesstraße until 22:00.
