Going out for breakfast is something of a sport in Munich, and the cafés fill with every type, from new couples to people alone with a newspaper. Munich's tourist office even has a typology: students order a Studentenfrühstück of roll, jam, boiled egg and coffee, and their typical question is whether there is Wi-Fi.1
The Bavarian classic is the Weißwurst. Some eat it the old way, sucking the meat out of the skin, which is called zuzeln; others slit the sausage lengthwise or crosswise and peel it.2 The Verbraucherzentrale reminds eaters that the noon rule is history: today the sausages are sold precooked.2
Local tip: Order Weißwürste in the morning with a Breze and sweet mustard; it is no longer a hygiene rule, but in Bavaria the late-morning Weißwurst remains the custom.2
Where these cafés are: Glockenbach & Isarvorstadt (5), Haidhausen (4), Maxvorstadt (4), Au (3), Schwabing (2), Berg am Laim (1), Sendling (1), Neuhausen & Nymphenburg (1).

Café Glockenspiel has been part of the city's breakfast culture for more than 25 years. On the fifth floor above Marienplatz you can choose a classic Bavarian plate with ham and boiled egg, a vegan menu with muesli and couscous, or a breakfast with avocado and shrimp cocktail; at 11:00 or 12:00 the view takes in the Glockenspiel.3
Lilli P., named after the actress Lilli Palmer, sets out a Sunday brunch buffet along its long bar, Prosecco included, and the queue outside can look like a club's; on weekdays it opens at 09:00.3
The tourist office's typology sends couples to The Victorian House, Café Glockenspiel or Café Fräulein, and groups of friends to Mary's Coffee Club, Café Franca or Ooh Baby I Like It Raw for avocado toast, chia pudding and acai bowls.1
The tired night owls in sunglasses head for the Gaststätte Großmarkthalle or the Trachtenvogl for Weißwürste, Strammer Max or eggs Benedict, and the students for Café am Beethovenplatz or Café Puck.1 The Victorian House is on Frauenstraße, and Ooh Baby on Rumfordstraße opens at 09:00 from Tuesday to Friday.
The Glockenbachviertel has the widest choice. Vollaths at Thalkirchner Straße 1 serves from 08:00 to 22:00 every day, Café Soley on Ehrengutstraße from 09:00 and until 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and the Patisserie Cafe Dukatz on Klenzestraße opens at 07:30 on weekdays.
In the Maxvorstadt, LAX Eatery on Neureutherstraße serves breakfast daily from 09:00 to 14:30, and MackGorilla on Marsstraße opens at 07:30. Haidhausen has Sorry Johnny on Preysingstraße, open daily from 07:30, Café im Hinterhof on Sedanstraße and LottiEck on Metzstraße.
In the Au, Henry hat Hunger on Zeppelinstraße opens at 08:00 on weekdays, and Café Faber on the same street serves brunch from Wednesday to Sunday.
Some cafés never stop serving breakfast. Mary's Coffee Club in the Maxvorstadt took the idea of all-day breakfast from its owner's travels through big cities abroad, along with a menu of bowls, curry and banana bread.4
Lamingtons on Passauerstraße in Sendling and Café Faber in the Au close at 16:00 and 17:00, while Vollaths and Café im Hinterhof keep serving into the evening.

No. The rule that a Weißwurst must not hear the noon bells comes from the days before refrigeration, when butchers sold the sausages raw each morning. Today they are sold precooked and chilled, but a late-morning Weißwurst with a Breze and sweet mustard is still the Bavarian custom.
Lilli P., named after the actress Lilli Palmer, lays out a Sunday brunch buffet along its long bar with Prosecco included, and queues form outside. On weekdays it opens at 09:00. Vollaths at Thalkirchner Straße 1 serves breakfast every day from 08:00.
