T. Nagar was carved out during 1923–25 under the Mambalam Town Planning Scheme, which drained the Long Tank, and is named after Sir P. Theagaraya Chetty of the Justice Party; most of its streets carry the names of ministers and leaders of that era.1 It is one of Chennai's busiest shopping districts and handles 70–80% of the gold sold in the city.1

Much of the coffee here is drunk standing, between shops. Vijayaram on South Usman Road is the address to know, Madras Coffee House has two counters in the neighborhood, and smaller cafés sit on Venkatanarayana Road and North Usman Road.

Local tip: Ask for the biscuit cup at Vijayaram on South Usman Road and drink it quickly: the cup is a chocolate-glazed wafer.3

Panagal Park, 8 acres at the center of the neighborhood, is where six arterial streets meet.1 Even Pondy Bazaar's name is disputed: one account credits Devaraj Mudaliar of Pondicherry, who opened ten shops on Sir Thyagaraya Road, while the historian S. Muthiah said it began as Soundarapandia Bazaar.1 1By2 Cafe is at 212 Sir Thyagaraya Road and This way in at 5/9 Deenadayalu Street.
