Chiaia is the affluent seafront quarter between Piazza Vittoria and Mergellina: 2.71 km² of the first municipality, with about 38,000 residents.1 Along the water runs the Villa Comunale, the park Ferdinand IV of Bourbon laid out in 1780 for himself and the Neapolitan nobility, on the model of the Tuileries in Paris.2
Inland, the streets around Piazza dei Martiri, Via Filangieri and Via San Pasquale hold the quarter's pasticcerie and grand cafés, and the alleys of the baretti (little bars) behind them fill up at night. East of the park, Via Partenope and Santa Lucia face Castel dell'Ovo.
Local tip: Walk the car-free stretch of Via Caracciolo early, then have breakfast inland at Moccia on Via San Pasquale a Chiaia, a bakery since 1936.

The lungomare and the Villa Comunale
Via Caracciolo was built on reclaimed land in 1869–1880 and named after Admiral Francesco Caracciolo, a hero of the 1799 Neapolitan Republic executed on Nelson's orders.3 Via Partenope went car-free in the summer of 2012, and Via Caracciolo from Piazza della Repubblica to the Rotonda Diaz followed on 6 May 2013.3
The Villa Comunale covers 110,000 m² between Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza Vittoria. It holds Enrico Alvino's Cassa Armonica bandstand and the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, whose aquarium is the oldest in Europe; Alessandro Mendini led its restoration in 1999.2 The park reached Piazza della Repubblica when it was extended west in 1834, and at its seaward edge the Rotonda Diaz, with its equestrian monument to General Armando Diaz, opened on 29 May 1936.3
Castel dell'Ovo and Santa Lucia
Castel dell'Ovo, the oldest castle in Naples, stands on the islet of Megaride, where the siren Parthenope came ashore in the city's founding myth. At its foot, Borgo Marinari is an old fishermen's quarter now full of restaurants.3
Caffè Megaride and Al Barcadero, at Banchina Santa Lucia 2, are by the castle's small harbor. Along the seafront road, Gran Caffè Cimmino is at Via Partenope 12, and Gran Caffè del Plebiscito and Caffè del Corso are on Via Santa Lucia.
Pastry shops and grand cafés inland
Giuseppina Moccia founded her bakery on Via San Pasquale in 1936, and it became known for its pizzette.4 Bar Pasticceria Moccia is at Via San Pasquale a Chiaia 21, and Pasticceria Piterà is a few doors up at 30. Bar Pasticceria Scaturchio is at Piazza Amedeo 5.
Gran Caffè La Caffettiera, at Piazza dei Martiri 26, was once an "Ambasciata del Caffè Napoletano", and roasts its beans to suit the day's humidity.5 Gran Caffè Cimmino has another bar on Piazzetta Giulio Rodinò, with tables outside.
Getting there and the baretti at night
The Chiaia funicular has run since 15 October 1889, from its Regina Margherita station in Chiaia up to Via Cimarosa in Vomero.6
Chiaia's nightlife centers on the Quadrilatero dei Baretti, Via Santa Caterina a Chiaia, Via Filangieri and Piazza San Luigi. Under the trial ordinance of 16 October to 16 November 2026, bars there must close by 01:00 from Sunday to Thursday, 02:00 on Fridays and 03:00 on Saturdays, and may not sell takeaway alcohol from midnight to 06:00.7
