Piazza Municipio runs from the city hall, Palazzo San Giacomo, down to the port, with Castel Nuovo on its seaward side. Charles I of Anjou had the castle built in 1279–1282 to a design by the French architect Pierre de Chaulnes; the Catalan Guillem Sagrera later rebuilt most of it for Alfonso V of Aragon, and it has housed the Civic Museum since 1990. It is also the seat of the Società Napoletana di Storia Patria, the city's historical society.1

East of the square the district becomes the old Porto quarter, crossed by Via Agostino Depretis and the first stretch of Corso Umberto I, where the University of Naples Federico II has its main building.2 Corso Umberto, Via Depretis and Via Monteoliveto have the most bars here, and two specialty-coffee addresses are close by, on Via Verdi and Via Alcide De Gasperi.

Local tip: For an early start by the port, Caffetteria Macario on Via Cervantes opens at 06:00 on weekdays, a few minutes' walk from Piazza Municipio.
