Posillipo is a rocky peninsula about 6 km long that closes the Bay of Naples to the west; the Greeks called it Pausílypon, "respite from worry".1 Mergellina is the harbor at its foot, where the seafront that starts at the port ends after about 3 km and hydrofoils leave for Ischia and the Aeolian and Pontine islands.2

The coffee here follows the water. Chalets and kiosks line the Mergellina end of Via Caracciolo and open early and late, while up on the hill Via Petrarca has the most bars, several with tables outside. A few more sit on Corso Vittorio Emanuele as it comes down to Mergellina station.

Local tip: Take the Mergellina funicular up to Via Manzoni, walk down Via Petrarca past its bars, and end at the chalets on Via Caracciolo, open until 02:00.

Getting there

Corso Vittorio Emanuele, laid out from 1853 for Ferdinand II and first named Corso Maria Teresa, curves 4.5 km along the hillside and ends at Piazza Piedigrotta, in front of Mergellina station.3 The Mergellina funicular, in service since 24 May 1931, climbs from the harbor through Sant'Antonio, San Gioacchino and Parco Angelina to Manzoni in about seven minutes.4 Via Posillipo, built in 1812–1824, starts at sea level at the Mergellina harbor.1

The chalets of Mergellina

Ciro Fummo opened Chalet Ciro, a small bar over the sea, in 1952, and four generations have run it since. Its graffa (a sugared ring doughnut) and gelato come together in the cono graffa, a doughnut shaped into a cone and filled with ice cream.5

On the same stretch of Via Caracciolo, Chalet Casa Infante e Leopoldo opens at 06:00 every day and closes at 02:00, or 03:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Chalet delle Rose and Chalet Cimmino are next door, and Il Kioskett is on Via Mergellina. Passalacqua counts Bar Ciro in Mergellina among its busiest bars, at up to 20 kg of coffee a day.6

Via Petrarca and the Posillipo hill

Bar Miranapoli, at Via Petrarca 62, opens daily 07:00–01:30, and Gran Caffè Cimmino at 147 runs 07:00–23:00. Petrarca Cafè, at 35, has tables outside. Via Petrarca and Piazza San Luigi fall under the October 2026 trial ordinance: closing by 01:00 from Sunday to Thursday, 02:00 on Fridays and 03:00 on Saturdays, until 16 November 2026.7

The Moccia family opened a space in Posillipo in 2009.8 Moccia, at Via Posillipo 20, opens Tuesday to Sunday 07:00–20:30. Pagano is farther out at Via Posillipo 191. Near the funicular's upper station, Selfie bar and Bar Pasticceria Pace are both on Via Manzoni, and Lucrezio Cafè on Via Tito Lucrezio Caro has tables outside.

Marechiaro, the Gaiola and Pausilypon

Along the coast, Marechiaro grew up around one of Posillipo's small harbors, and Roman house remains can be seen on its beach. The Gaiola underwater park protects submerged parts of an imperial villa, and the Pausilypon archaeological park on Cape Posillipo is reached through the 770 m Tunnel of Sejanus.1 Villa Rosebery serves as the Italian President's residence in Naples, and the Naples Grand Prix was raced on the hill from 1933 to 1962.1
