Naples takes its coffee short, strong and on the move, and it pays more for the habit every year.1 An espresso at the counter averaged €1.24 in June 2026, against €0.90 in June 2021, in Altroconsumo's reading of the Ministry of Enterprises price observatory.2 In most of the 19 cities it compared, the cup cost €1.20–1.40.2

Much of that coffee is roasted locally. Passalacqua was founded in Naples in 1948, and Bar Mexico on Piazza Dante has poured its blend since the same year.34 Kimbo traces its blend to a bar in the Rione Sanità, where the brothers Francesco, Gerardo and Elio Rubino started it in 1963; it now roasts at Melito di Napoli and sells in 100 countries.5 Toraldo began in the Sanità too, in 1968, as a small shop with its own roaster run by the Simonetti family.6

Several bars still carry a roaster's name over the door, among them Gran Caffè Toraldo on Via Luca Giordano and Bar Tico on Via Medina. The pasticceria (pastry shop with a coffee counter) is the other half of the morning, whether that means a sfogliatella at Attanasio by the central station or at Santoro in Arenella.7

How coffee works in Naples

Ask for un caffè and you get an espresso, often already sweetened. Some bars add a fixed measure of sugar to every cup, so say if you want it amaro (unsweetened) or with less; a sign by the counter usually gives the house rule.8 Cups are often kept in hot water, for the aroma and for cleanliness, and the free glass of water comes first, as a palate-cleanser. Drinking it afterwards suggests the coffee was not good.8

In a busy bar you pay at the cassa (till) first, then hand the scontrino (receipt) to the barista; regulars leave their small change on it.8 As of August 2026 a coffee at the counter typically cost €1–1.50, and more at a table, above all in the historic center.9 At Caffè Ceraldi on Piazza Carità the machine faces the room, so the barista never turns their back on customers.9

House specialties change from bar to bar. At Il Vero Bar del Professore on Piazza Trieste e Trento, Raffaele Ferrieri makes a hazelnut cream by hand each morning, adapted from his grandmother's hazelnut cake, for the caffè alla nocciola; by 2012 he had invented 63 coffee variations.10 He sued other bars that borrowed the word professore and lost, which is why his sign says vero (the real one).10 Bar Gianni on Via Pietro Platania, in Vomero, tops its coffee with cocoa and cream.9

At home, Neapolitans long brewed in the napoletana, or cuccumella, a flip pot invented by the Parisian Jean-Louis Morize in 1819. Once the water boils, the pot is turned over and the water drips through the grounds in five to ten minutes, with a paper cone, the cuppetiello, over the spout to hold the aroma.11 The moka displaced it from the mid-20th century.11 Cuccuma Caffè, in the Centro Storico, still serves coffee from the flip pot.12

How much does an espresso cost in Naples in 2026?

An espresso at the counter in Naples averaged €1.24 in June 2026, up from €0.90 in June 2021, according to Altroconsumo's comparison of Ministry of Enterprises data. Which neighborhood of Naples has the most cafés?

Vomero's bars line Via Luca Giordano, Via Scarlatti and Piazza Vanvitelli; in the Centro Storico they crowd Via Duomo, Via dei Tribunali and Piazza Dante. Via Toledo and Via Duomo are the busiest café streets in the city.

Is espresso served with sugar in Naples?

Often, yes. Some Naples bars add a fixed amount of sugar to every espresso, so ask for it amaro (unsweetened) or with less sugar if you prefer; a sign at the counter usually explains the house rule. The cup is often kept in hot water, and the free glass of water is drunk before the coffee, not after.

Which coffee roasters started in Naples?

Passalacqua was founded in Naples in 1948, and Bar Mexico on Piazza Dante has served its blend since then. Kimbo's blend was created in 1963 in a bar in the Rione Sanità by the brothers Francesco, Gerardo and Elio Rubino. Toraldo was founded in the Sanità in 1968 by the Simonetti family.

What is a caffè alla nocciola in Naples?

An espresso with a hazelnut cream, the signature of Il Vero Bar del Professore on Piazza Trieste e Trento, near Piazza del Plebiscito. Its owner, Raffaele Ferrieri, makes the cream by hand each morning from an adaptation of his grandmother's hazelnut cake. By 2012 he had created 63 coffee variations.

What is a cuccumella, the Neapolitan coffee pot?

The cuccumella, or napoletana, is a flip coffee pot invented by Jean-Louis Morize in Paris in 1819. When the water boils, the pot is turned over and the water drips through the coffee in five to ten minutes. The moka replaced it in most Naples homes from the mid-20th century, but some cafés still brew with it.
