The Centro Storico follows the street plan of Neapolis, the Greek city founded inland after the first settlement on Pizzofalcone, and UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1995. The site covers about 1,021 hectares and holds more than 200 historic churches.1 Two of the ancient main streets survive as Via dei Tribunali and Spaccanapoli, joined by Via San Gregorio Armeno, the street of nativity-figure workshops.2
After Vomero it has the most bars in Naples. They crowd Via Duomo, which cuts across both old main streets, as well as Via dei Tribunali, Via San Biagio dei Librai and Piazza Dante at the western edge. Piazza Bellini, with its literary cafés and late bars, takes over in the evening.
Local tip: For a coffee before the shops open, Caffè Ciorfito on Via San Biagio dei Librai starts at 06:30 Monday to Saturday, a short walk from San Gregorio Armeno.

Spaccanapoli, Via dei Tribunali and Via Duomo
Via San Gregorio Armeno links the upper decumanus, now Via dei Tribunali, with the lower one, Spaccanapoli. Its church was founded around 930 on the foundations of a temple of Ceres.2 The workshops make figures all year, and the main displays run from early November to 6 January.2
On Spaccanapoli's Via San Biagio dei Librai, Caffè Ciorfito at 90/91 opens at 06:30 Monday to Saturday. On Via dei Tribunali, Caffè Diaz at 25 opens at 07:00 and Ippolito Caffè at 330 runs daily 07:30–20:00. Via Duomo has more bars than any other street in the quarter, Zambardino at 235 among them, and Sfogliate e Sfogliatelle bakes on San Gregorio Armeno itself, daily 08:00–19:00.
Piazza Bellini and Port'Alba
Port'Alba, the gate between Piazza Dante and Piazza Bellini, was built in 1625 for the viceroy Antonio Álvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alba, and the short street inside it is known for its bookshops.3 Opposite a plaque from 1796 stands the Antica Pizzeria Port'Alba, founded in 1738.3 Libreria Beriso, at Via Port'Alba 27, serves until 01:00.
Caffè letterario Intra Moenia opened on Piazza Bellini in 1989 to help revive the old center, which few tourists or Neapolitans visited at the time. Its name means "inside the walls", after the Greco-Roman city wall by the square, and it publishes its own books on the history of Naples.4
Late nights and the Piazza Bellini rules
Volta, at Via Bellini 30, stays open until 02:00 every day, and Taralleria Napoletana on Via San Biagio dei Librai serves until midnight on Fridays and 01:00 on Saturdays. From 6 March to 6 May 2026, an ordinance made bars on and around Piazza Bellini close by 00:30 from Sunday to Thursday and by 01:30 on Fridays and Saturdays, banned takeaway drinks from 22:30 to 06:00, and set fines of €2,000–20,000.5
The caffè sospeso and the flip pot
Old-center bars keep the caffè sospeso, the prepaid coffee left for someone who cannot afford one. The habit dates from after the Second World War, and in many traditional bars of the old center it is still a matter of solidarity.6 Caffè Ciorfito on Via San Biagio dei Librai is one of the bars that takes part.7
Cuccuma Caffè, at Via San Giovanni Maggiore Pignatelli 1a, is a small café built around the napoletana flip pot, and you can drink the coffee outside.8 It opens Monday to Saturday 09:00–22:00 and on Sundays from 12:00. Espresso Napolitano is at Via Enrico Pessina 55, a few steps from Piazza Dante.
