Fushimi lies between Nagoya Station and Sakae and is where the Higashiyama and Tsurumai subway lines cross.1 It is the city's financial district,2 with Marunouchi to the north and, in Nishiki 2-chōme, the Chōjamachi textile quarter. Merchants from Kiyosu settled Chōjamachi around the start of work on Nagoya Castle in the early 1600s; wholesale cloth took over from the late Taishō period, and around 1970 the street had nearly 100 wholesalers.3

By 2020 the wholesalers' cooperative was down to about 20 members. Chōjamachi was a main venue of the first Aichi Triennale in 2010, and since 2002 empty buildings, starting with the Ebisu Building, have been turned into cafés and shops.3 The Chunichi Shimbun defines the quarter as the 16 blocks between Nishiki-dōri, Sakura-dōri, Honmachi-dōri and Fushimi-dōri, and new apartment blocks are rising there because it sits halfway between Nagoya Station and Sakae.3 Its kissaten sit among office blocks, and the oldest names are in Nishiki 1-chōme and Marunouchi 2-chōme.

Local tip: For a standing glass rather than a cup, come to Fushimi Chikagai after noon; for coffee before 08:00, Nishiki on Nishiki 1-chōme opens at 07:00.4
