Sakae (栄) is Nagoya's downtown. The name comes from the former town of Sakae-machi, and the shopping district grew along Hirokōji, a street widened after the great Manji fire; Itō Gofukuten, forerunner of the Matsuzakaya department store, moved here in 1910.1 The commercial center also takes in Nishiki 3-chōme, one of the city's three main nightlife quarters, and Higashi-sakura 1-chōme in Higashi Ward.1

For coffee, Sakae offers the most variety in one walk: tea salons inside department stores, roasters near Nagoya PARCO and the park, and kissaten that open at 07:00. Underground malls tie it together, so a wet day is no obstacle.

Local tip: For breakfast near Hisaya-ōdōri, go to Kato Coffee, which opens at 08:00, but not on a Wednesday; by mid-afternoon it has closed for the day.5
