Shikemichi (四間道) runs along the second lane west of the Horikawa river. After a fire in 1700 destroyed more than 1,600 houses, Tokugawa Yoshimichi, fourth lord of Owari, had it widened to four ken, about 7 m, to protect the merchants' riverside warehouses.1 The merchants had come with the move from Kiyosu that began in 1610, and their storehouses lined the river for its boat traffic.2

The east side keeps its dozō (土蔵, whitewashed storehouses) on stone bases, and some townhouses still have yane-gami, small shrines on the second floor.1 The city made the street a townscape preservation district in June 1986, and its old houses now hold cafés, restaurants and gift shops.2 Endōji (円頓寺), the covered shopping street at the district's north end, is named after a temple; the temples moved to their present site after a fire in 1724, and samurai houses stood here before that.3

Local tip: At New Poppy, the griddle ogura toast comes with its coffee syrup on the side: pour it over the ice cream yourself.5

Getting to Shikemichi

Kokusai Center Station on the Sakura-dōri Line is the closest: from Exit 2 it is about a five-minute walk north.1 The western end of Endōji is a short walk from Nagoya Station.3 In March 2026 Nishi Ward added the Shikemichi district to its list of certified local brands, beside Noritake no Mori and the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology.2

Endōji's arcade

The arcade's roof was renewed in full by 21 March 2015. The street has held an autumn Paris festival since 2012, signed a sister-street agreement with the Passage des Panoramas in Paris on 2 April 2015, and has held a Tanabata festival since the late 1950s or early 1960s.3

Nagonoya, at Nagono 1-6-13, is a café, diner and guesthouse in one. It took over Nishi Asahi, a kissaten with more than 80 years behind it, and took its present name on 1 April 2018.45 It brought back Nishi Asahi's egg sandwich, two layers of fluffy omelet with chopped cucumber.5

Ogura toast's descendants

Kissa Matsuba, at Nagono 1-35-14, is a licensed offshoot (noren-wake) of Mitsuba's main shop, now closed, where ogura toast began.5 It opens 08:00–18:00 and closes on Wednesdays.

Kissa New Poppy, opened on Shikemichi in a Shōwa retro-modern style, makes a griddle ogura toast: sesame bread with red-bean paste and vanilla ice cream, over which you pour a strong syrup made from coffee it roasts itself.5 It opens 08:00–20:00 every day.

Komeda's first room and the newer roasters

The Komeda's Coffee chain started here: its first shop opened in February 1968 in the Kikui Building in Nagono 2-chōme and closed on 31 March 2014, when the building was torn down.6

Newer coffee is spread through Nagono: Port Coffee on the second floor of Nagono 2-11-15, Rows Coffee at 2-21-5, No Detail Is Small at 1-24-2, and Mammy's Coffee at 1-20-35, an Endōji shop. Cafe de Lyon Blue is at Nagono 1-38-13 and Ise Cha mirume, an Ise tea house, at 1-36-57. Nagono Sabō Hanasenka (那古野茶房 花千花) is at 1-18-6.
