Meieki (名駅) is what Nagoya calls the district around Nagoya Station, and much of its business happens underground. Sun Road opened on 18 March 1957 as Nagoya Chikagai, took its present name in December 1972 and is described as Japan's oldest full-scale underground shopping street, with about 80 shops beneath Meieki-dōri.1

Above ground, the department-store towers have their own cafés, but the older rooms sit a few blocks from the gates: Kako in Meieki 5-chōme toward Yanagibashi, Lyon in a basement on Meieki-minami, and Tsuzuki on Taikō-dōri, which has been pouring for about 70 years.2

Local tip: Missed breakfast? Go to Lyon on Meieki-minami, where the morning service runs until the 18:00 close.8

Coffee inside the station

Some of the coffee is inside the station itself. Coffee Avanti, on the Umaimon-dōri passage inside the JR station, opens 07:00–21:00 every day, and Perk Coffee stands on the Shinkansen platform for tracks 14 and 15.

Higher up, Cafe du Ciel is on the 51st floor of JR Nagoya Takashimaya, and Books & Cafe UCC on the eighth floor of the Takashimaya Gate Tower. KITTE Nagoya has 24/7 Cafe Apartment on its second floor and Dressy Cafe on its third, and Salon de Mon cher is in the first basement of Midland Square.

Under the streets: Sun Road and Meichika

Miyako Chikagai followed in September 1963 under Nishiki-dōri, built to link the station with the Nagoya Miyako Hotel, which opened the same day and closed in 2000; it has 21 shops, and it and Sun Road both connect to Meichika and Kitachika.3

Compal, the kissaten chain whose main shop is in Ōsu, has two branches down here.4 Its Sun Road shop opens 08:00–21:00 daily. At its Meichika branch in 2025, a morning set with coffee cost ¥550 and brought a hot pressed ham-and-egg sandwich with coleslaw; a hot or iced coffee alone was ¥420.5

Sun Road also has Kissa Furusato, a Myokoen tea counter and Chapeau Blanc.

Kako, Lyon and a morning that lasts all day

Kako's main shop, in the Hanaguruma Building at Meieki 5-16-17, opened in 1972 and is said to be the first kissaten in Nagoya to serve coffee it roasted itself.6 It roasts selected beans every day and brews by nel drip, through a flannel filter; in 2018 its morning ran 07:00–11:00.6 Its best-known plate is the Shantie Rouge Special, bread with red-bean paste, cream cheese and four homemade jams.7 The Yanagibashi branch at Meieki 5-30-4 served it for ¥950 in 2024, opened 07:00–16:30 and closed on Thursdays.8

Lyon, on the basement floor of the Mitsui Building at Meieki-minami 1-24-30, about six minutes' walk from the JR station, opens 08:00–18:00 and is known for keeping its morning service going until closing.8 Bucyo Coffee, on Sanzō-dōri at Meieki-minami 1-10-9, toasts its bread with either ogura bean paste or kinako butter, mixed with roasted-soybean crunch.7

Tsuzuki, on the second floor of its own building at Taikō-dōri 6-1, is known for the café au lait tenjō-otoshi (“dropped from the ceiling”): the owner climbs a stepladder and pours the milk and coffee from above.72

Getting to the old kissaten
