Nagoya spends its coffee money away from home. Over 2023–2025, households of two or more in the city spent ¥16,431 a year on kissa-dai (喫茶代, café and coffee-shop bills), the highest of any prefectural capital or major city, ahead of Tokyo's 23 wards at ¥16,270 and neighboring Gifu at ¥14,663; the national figure was ¥10,261.1 Spending on coffee to brew at home, ¥8,462, sits close to the national ¥8,389.2

Aichi Prefecture counted 6,171 kissaten (喫茶店, traditional coffee shops) in 2021, second only to Osaka.3 Ogura toast (小倉トースト), toast spread with sweet red-bean paste, is one of their inventions: the Nagoya City Library traces it to Mitsuba (満つ葉), a café near Wakamiya shrine that started as a sweets shop in 1916, where students dipping bread into zenzai (sweet bean soup) gave the owner the idea around 1921.4

Komeda's Coffee, now a national chain, began as one room: Katō Tarō opened it in February 1968 in the Kikui Building in Nagono, Nishi Ward, and named it after his family's rice business.5 Older independents still pour. Kako in Meieki 5-chōme is billed as the first Nagoya café to roast its own beans, and Bonbon in Izumi has served cake with its coffee since the Shōwa 30s, between 1955 and 1964.6

How a Nagoya morning works

Mōningu (モーニング, the morning service) is the local habit: order a drink in the morning and food arrives with it at no extra charge. At Bonbon in Izumi, a blend cost ¥350 in 2025 and came with toast and a boiled egg from 08:00 to 10:00, Monday to Saturday; jam, yogurt, azuki or a small salad cost extra.7 Nagoya's official tourism site reports queues for the morning sets on weekdays and holidays alike.8

Some rooms stretch the custom. Lyon, in the basement of the Mitsui Building on Meieki-minami, served its morning until the 18:00 close in 2024, with coffee at ¥430.9 In 2025 the drink came with a choice of six items, five kinds of press sandwich or toast, and an ogura morning cost ¥260 on top.7

Plain coffee costs less than in Tokyo. A hot coffee at a table-service kissaten averaged ¥463 in Nagoya in 2025, against ¥613 in Tokyo's 23 wards; the price rose from ¥455 in January to ¥467 from July. A small cup at a self-service chain was ¥360 until August and ¥390 from September, and a mixed sandwich at a café averaged ¥779.10

Order ogura toast by thickness where the menu offers a choice: at Bucyo Coffee KAKO on Meieki-minami, a thick slice cost ¥530 and a thin one ¥350 in 2024, and the ¥500 blend came with free refills.11 Leave no tip: in its advice for visitors, Japan's national tourism organization says tipping is not common in cafés.12
