Nihonbashi grew around the bridge of the same name, the point from which road distances to Tokyo are measured. The present stone bridge on a steel frame, designed by Tsumaki Yorinaka, was finished in 1911.1 The Mitsui family built the district's early trade and founded Mitsukoshi, Japan's first department store, here, and Nihonbashi later became the country's leading financial district.1 To the west stands Tokyo Station, opened on 20 December 1914.2

Here coffee runs on office hours. Many of the counters around the station and Nihonbashi Muromachi open at 07:00 for commuters and close by early evening, and several shut at weekends. The specialty bars sit further east, in the quieter blocks of Ningyōchō, Hamachō and Ōdenmachō, closer to the Sumida River.

Local tip: Find kilometer zero on Nihonbashi bridge, then walk a block north to Mikado Coffee in Muromachi, which opens at 07:00 on weekdays.1

Tokyo Station and the Marunouchi side

Tatsuno Kingo designed the three-story brick building on the Marunouchi side. A B-29 firebombing raid on 25 May 1945 destroyed its domes and most of the third floor, and a five-year restoration finished in October 2012 returned the façade to its prewar form, with both domes rebuilt to the original design.2 The station handles more than 4,000 scheduled trains a day, and the Shinkansen platforms are on the Yaesu side.2

Aroma Coffee in Yaesu 2-chōme opens at 07:00 Monday to Saturday and 07:30 on Sunday. Japan Rail Café serves until 22:00 on weekdays, and Kyobashi Sembikiya Fruits Parlor, at 9-1 Marunouchi, is open daily 10:00–20:00.

The bridge, its expressway and the oldest tea house

An expressway built over the bridge shortly before the 1964 Olympics blocked its old view toward Mount Fuji. Work has started on moving 1.8 km of it underground between the Kandabashi and Edobashi junctions, with completion expected in fiscal 2041.1

Tea came to Nihonbashi long before coffee. Yamamotoyama was founded here in 1690 by the first Yamamoto Kahei; the second sold Edo's first aosei sencha (green-processed sencha, the forerunner of today's sencha) in 1738, and the sixth created gyokuro (玉露, shade-grown green tea) in 1835.5 Its tearoom, Yamamotoyama Fujie Sabō, opens daily 10:30–20:00 in Nihonbashi 2-chōme.

Mikado Coffee and the early counters

Mikado Coffee has roasted its own beans since it was founded in 1948, when coffee beans were still scarce after the war, and its best-known item is the モカソフト (moka sofuto, mocha soft-serve ice cream).3 The main shop, at 1-6-7 Nihonbashi Muromachi, opens at 07:00 on weekdays and 10:00 at weekends.

Earlier still, 珈琲の店 都亜 opens at 06:30 Monday to Saturday, closing at 17:30 on weekdays and 14:30 on Saturdays. Cherbourg serves weekday mornings from 07:00 to 14:30, and Matenrou Coffee, a shared coffee shop, opens at 07:00 on Mondays.
