Shibuya's coffee splits between the hilly lanes south of the station and the quieter blocks north toward Yoyogi Park. On Dōgenzaka, the Hyakkendana lanes were developed after the 1923 Kantō earthquake to draw businesses displaced from central Tokyo, and once held more than 100 well-known shops.5 Meikyoku Kissa Lion, founded there in 1926, has kept its postwar interior.5

North of the station, the residential blocks of Kamiyamachō and Tomigaya became a specialty-coffee quarter after Fuglen, a café from Oslo dating to 1963, opened its first Tokyo branch in 2012; its Tokyo roastery followed in 2014, because shipping beans from Norway had proved too hard.1 Several more roasters' cafés have since opened within a few streets of it.

Local tip: Time a visit to Meikyoku Kissa Lion for the 15:00 or 19:00 record concert, and keep your phone in your pocket: photography is not allowed.4
