Shinjuku Station is the world's busiest railway station, registered by Guinness World Records, with an average of 3.59 million people a day in 2018 and well over 200 exits.1 Five operators run through it: JR East, Keio, Odakyu, Toei and Tokyo Metro.1 The neighborhood spreads from the towers of Nishi-Shinjuku east to Kabukichō and north to the Korean shops of Ōkubo, and west along the Keio line to Hatsudai.

Shinjuku keeps longer coffee hours than most of the city. Edinburgh, a kissaten at 3-2-4 Shinjuku, is open 24 hours, and several cafés in Kabukichō and around the station serve until 23:00. By the west exit, Tajimaya has roasted its own beans since 1964.

Local tip: For a quiet weekend afternoon in Shinjuku, book fuzkue ahead: weekends are often full until about 17:00, and evenings usually have seats.4

In 2022 the house original coffee cost ¥780 and coffee zenzai, a sweet red-bean dessert with coffee, ¥880.2 Time Out also points to its coffee jelly with cream and buttered toast with azuki paste.6 Tajimaya is at 1-2-6 Nishi-Shinjuku, about two minutes from the JR west exit.2
