Breakfast is when Almaty's cafés make their money: across Kazakhstan, café sales peak at 09:00, and a quarter of the day's takings come between 08:00 and 10:00, with half of them in the till before lunch at 13:00.1 Menus mix Russian and international dishes. Syrniki, fried pancakes of tvorog (curd cheese) mixed with flour, eggs and sugar, are usually eaten sweet with jam or smetana (sour cream), and share the page with porridge, omelets and shakshuka.23
Satpayev & Republic Square has the most breakfast and brunch cafés, ahead of Golden Square and Samal & Dostyk; one more, Benedict, is near the Arbat.
Local tip: For the earliest start, Shecker Coffee on Kurmangazy opens at 07:30 every day; Violet on Zein Shashkin Street serves brunch even earlier, since it never closes.
Where these cafés are: Satpayev & Republic Square (3), Golden Square (2), Samal & Dostyk (2), Arbat & Green Bazaar (1).

What a breakfast costs
In a 2022 round-up of Almaty breakfast cafés, average bills mostly ran from 3,000 to 6,000 ₸. Several places added filter coffee or tea to a breakfast ordered before noon, or a free coffee with each breakfast set, and some served breakfast all day.3 Sets often carry a place name: an "Almaty" breakfast of fried eggs, sausages, beans and sourdough bread, a Turkish breakfast with simit, or an American scramble.3 Hours vary: in the same survey one café served breakfast 09:00–15:00 and another kept its savory breakfasts to 08:00–12:00.3
The Kazakh table has its own fried bread, бауырсақ (bauyrsaq): puffs of fried dough eaten with tea, jam, honey or kaymak (clotted cream); Turkic and Mongolian families sometimes dip them straight into the tea.4 Syrniki came the other way, from Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian kitchens, where they are eaten for breakfast or dessert.2
