Time Out Kuala Lumpur called brunch the city's default weekend activity back in 2017, and its list mixed avocado-toast cafés with dim sum, banana leaf rice and laksa.1 The mix still shows. Kenny Hills Bakers serves nasi lemak beside its sandwiches, toasties, pastas and croissants.2 Nasi lemak, rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf with sambal, anchovies, peanuts, egg and cucumber, counts as Malaysia's national dish and a standard Malay breakfast.3

Bukit Bintang and KLCC have the most brunch cafés, with one each in Chinatown, Mont Kiara, Segambut and Ampang Hilir. Several sit in old shophouses and bungalows rather than malls.

Local tip: For a late brunch, Mountbatten on Jalan Tun Perak serves until 22:00 and Ra-Ft in Mont Kiara until 21:00, while Miss J on Jalan Mayang closes at 18:00.

Where these cafés are: KLCC (2), Bukit Bintang (2), Segambut & Kenny Hills (1), Chinatown & Merdeka Square (1), Mont Kiara & Sri Hartamas (1), Ampang Hilir (1).

VCR: from cake counter to brunch kitchen

VCR, in a two-story corner shophouse on Jalan Galloway, started in 2013 with coffee and cakes only, then added brunch and later its own roastery and kitchen.4 In 2018 its Turkish-style eggs were poached eggs with pomodoro sauce, chickpeas, pistachio and chicken chipolata.4

In December 2024 the soft-shell crab burger cost from RM30 and filter coffee from RM25.5 It opens 08:30–20:00 daily. In Chinatown that month, Lokl Coffee Co on Jalan Tun H.S. Lee charged RM22 for fluffy pancakes and RM38 for its Lokl Breakfast.5

Bungalow cafés near KLCC

RGB & the Beanhive opened in September 2014 in a bungalow at 35 Jalan Damai, off Jalan Ampang, run by the team from RAW Coffee. The owners planned it as a coffee bar, micro-roastery and vegetarian eatery under one roof, and the opening menu ran to coconut-oil wraps, house-made vegetable burgers and frittata.6 Today it has Wi-Fi, outdoor seating and vegan dishes.

A few streets away, Miss J at 1 Jalan Mayang serves brunch at outdoor tables daily 08:00–18:00 and takes cards. In Bukit Bintang, Algae Eats at 2 Jalan Robertson has an air-conditioned room and takes cards.

Brunch on the old Mountbatten Road

Mountbatten, a brunch café at 58 Jalan Tun Perak that serves until 22:00, shares its name with the street's old one. Jalan Tun Perak was Java Street until 1946, then Mountbatten Road, then Jalan Mountbatten from 1961, and has had its present name since 1981.7 The Masjid Jamek LRT station, built over the Klang River bridge in 1996 and an interchange since 1999, is on the same road.7

West of the center, Ra-Ft in Mont Kiara serves brunch daily 09:00–21:00 with Wi-Fi and outdoor seating, and Kenny Hills Bakers & Bistro in Taman Tunku runs 08:00–19:00. The original Bukit Tunku branch has plenty of dine-in space, and its menu runs to wood-fired sourdough pizzas.2

Service charge and tax on the bill

A sit-down bill often grows by two lines. Restaurants usually add a service charge of 10%, and each sets its own: in January 2025 one coffee-shop owners' association said members could raise it to as much as 15% over Chinese New Year.8

The second line is service tax. Food and beverage services are taxed at 6%, one of the reduced rates, while most other taxable services pay 8%.9
