The Petronas Twin Towers, centerpiece of KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Centre), were built on the city's old racecourse, the former Selangor Turf Club. Designed by César Pelli, they stand 451.9 meters tall and were the world's tallest buildings from 1998 to 2004; a double-decker skybridge joins them at the 41st and 42nd floors, 170 meters up.1 The towers were officially opened on 31 August 1999.1

At their foot are Suria KLCC, a six-level mall opened on 8 May 1998, and KLCC Park, 50 acres designed by Roberto Burle Marx.32 The cafés sit on the side streets, from Jalan Kia Peng to Jalan Damai and Jalan Pinang.

Local tip: Walk the 1.3 km track in KLCC Park before the heat builds, then take breakfast at Maru, which opens at 07:00, or at Miss J on Jalan Mayang from 08:00.

Getting to KLCC

The city also gets at least 2,600 mm of rain a year, most of it in the northeast monsoon from about October to March, when an indoor table at Suria KLCC is the fallback.57 The mall also holds Petrosains, a science discovery center.3

Jalan Yap Kwan Seng, on the district's edge, is named after Yap Kwan Seng, the fifth and last Kapitan China of Kuala Lumpur, from 1889 to 1902.6 Secret Garden is on Lorong Yap Kwan Seng.
