Mont Kiara was a rubber estate until Sunrise Berhad developed it in the 1990s; the name refers to neighboring Bukit Kiara, with mont as the French for mountain. It is heavily populated by expatriates and served by two international schools, the British Garden International School and the American Mont'Kiara International School.1

Sri Hartamas, whose name means Golden Estates, sits right next door. Its houses went up in the 1980s, it boomed in the mid-1990s, and it remains popular with expatriate families with children; the shops cluster in Desa Sri Hartamas.2 Cafés split between the condominium blocks along Jalan Kiara and the numbered shoplot streets of Sri Hartamas.

Local tip: For a weekday start before 08:00, Kopenhagen Coffee on Jalan Kiara 3 opens at 07:00; for a late table, the Sri Hartamas shoplots run until midnight.
