The Centro Histórico covers about 10 km² and was once the whole city, laid out around the Plaza Grande with barrios grouped around smaller churches.1 The cathedral, on Calle 60, was built from 1561 to 1598 with stone from the pyramids of T'Hó, and was the first cathedral completed on the American mainland.2
Cafés spread thinly across the grid here, from Cucu Bistro and Coffee on Calle 59, west of the plaza, to Origen Tostadores de Café on Calle 77 and Alma Cálida on Calle 75 in the south. Antonella Café-Bar is on Calle 52 and Mi Buen Gusto at Calle 54 #467, on the east side.
Local tip: For the Wednesday video mapping on the Casa de Montejo at 20:30, get a coffee first at Cucu Bistro and Coffee on Calle 59, a short walk west of the plaza.5

The Plaza Grande and Casa de Montejo
On the plaza's south side, at Calle 63 #506, the Casa de Montejo keeps a Plateresque façade with the Montejo coat of arms above the balcony and two stone guards flanking the crest.3 It is a museum, open Tuesday to Saturday 11:00–18:00 and Sunday 11:00–14:00, with free entry and free guided tours.3
Mérida's oldest sorbet house started on this square. Dulcería y Sorbetería Colón opened in 1907 in the portales (arcades) of the Plaza Grande, founded by Vicente Rodríguez y Peláez, who had worked in the pastry kitchen of Havana's Hotel Inglaterra, and his friend Felipe Sánchez.4
Free shows after dark
The city stages something almost every night. On Monday at 21:00 the Ayuntamiento's folk ballet dances a vaquería (Yucatecan folk-dance show) below the city hall; on Wednesday at 20:30 a video mapping about the founding of Mérida plays on the Casa de Montejo façade.5
Friday brings Pok ta Pok, a re-creation of the ancient Maya ball game, in front of the cathedral at 20:00, and on Sunday Mérida en Domingo fills the Plaza Grande with crafts, food and shows from 10:00.5 On Tuesday at 20:00, Martes de Trova brings free trova to the Centro Cultural Olimpo, on Calle 62 between 61 and 63.5 May highs average 36.7 °C, and every weekday show starts at 20:00 or later.65
San Juan, San Sebastián and La Ermita
South of the plaza, San Juan's church was built around 1770 and the square across from it in 1883; its fountain, La Negrita, came from Paris, and most vans to towns around the state leave from here.1 San Sebastián, on Calle 70 at Calle 75, is the birthplace of the panucho, a Yucatecan snack of fried tortilla, and La Ermita's diagonal stone streets mark the end of the old royal road to Campeche.1
Coffee south and west of the plaza
Origen Tostadores de Café, at Calle 77 #528, serves specialty coffee, with Wi-Fi and a smoke-free room, open Monday to Friday 08:00–17:00. Organico Bar de Café y Cocina is at Calle 62 #582 between 71 and 73, Central Mid at Calle 63 #503G and Coffee Breeze on Privada 71A.
West of the plaza, Cucu Bistro and Coffee is at Calle 59 #527C between 64 and 66, and La Abadía is on Calle 62.
