Santa Lucía is one of Mérida's oldest barrios (neighborhoods), with beginnings in 1565, a few years after the city was founded. Its church and park face each other at the corner of Calles 60 and 55.1 Since 14 January 1965 the park has held a weekly serenata (serenade) in honor of Yucatecan composers.2
These few blocks hold the tightest group of cafés in the old center. Bengala Kaffeehaus, Márago Coffee and Deli Town are on Calle 60, Sempere is upstairs on Calle 62, Tinoc Café is on Calle 58, and Voltacafé and White Paper House are on Calle 53, two blocks north of the park.
Local tip: On a Thursday, take a coffee from Bengala Kaffeehaus around 20:30 and cross Calle 60 to the park before the 21:00 serenata.3

The park is three blocks north of the Plaza Grande along Calle 60, the street the cathedral faces between Calles 61 and 63.3 On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, 20:00 to 01:00, that stretch is car-free under the Corazón de Mérida program; since 13 February 2025 the closure has run past Santa Lucía as far as Calle 47.4 On those nights restaurants may set tables in the roadway, and artisans sell Yucatecan products along the street.4
Márago Coffee's Centro branch, at Calle 60 #491 between 55 and 57, is in an old building facing the José Peón Contreras Theater and the university's cultural center.5
The Serenata de Santa Lucía starts at 21:00 every Thursday at the corner of Calles 60 and 55, with trova trios (guitar-and-voice groups) and poetry, and admission is free.3 Bengala Kaffeehaus, facing the park on Calle 60, is open daily 07:00–22:00, which covers both the first coffee of the morning and the hour before the music.
Bengala's front room is small, with two high tables. The main seating is a quiet courtyard at the back, part of a hotel, where one visitor met mosquitoes and another found no outlets.67
Voltacafé fills the shaded inner courtyard of Plaza Carmesí on Calle 53, with tables under umbrellas and leaves.6 Its Wi-Fi reaches every part of the café, though outlets depend on where you sit, and it is open daily 08:00–23:00.7 White Paper House, at Calle 53 #502N, has air-conditioning inside, tables outside and takes cards. Back on Calle 60, Deli Town is near the park and MEXÍ Boutique is two blocks north, between Calles 49 and 51; El Hoyo Casa de Té pours tea rather than coffee.
Tinoc Café at Calle 58 #444 opens at 07:30 every day and stays open until 20:00 from Monday to Saturday; on Sunday it closes at 14:30. Bendito Café at Calle 55 #461C serves weekdays 08:00–16:30 and Saturdays 08:00–14:00, and has Wi-Fi.
Sempere is on the second floor at Calle 62 #479, between 55 and 57, with tables by the windows over the center.5 It opens 08:00–20:00 from Wednesday to Sunday and 09:00–16:00 on Monday, and closes on Tuesday. The brew bar works with Chemex, AeroPress and Hario V60, a bookshop called Otra librería Sempere shares the space, and the bill arrives inside a book.5
