García Ginerés began as the San Cosme colony, founded in 1904 by Joaquín García Ginerés.1 He was a Catalan who had earlier failed to turn the neighboring village of Itzimná into a suburb, and San Cosme was then thought to be far too far from the city.2

The colonia lies between the Reforma and Cupules avenues, and Avenida Colón runs through it to Paseo de Montejo.2 Its cafés sit near the park and on numbered side streets: Liuba Café Gourmet at Calle 20 and Colón, Amor de Café on Calle 22, Marshé on Calle 17 and Coffee Brew Lab SCR on Calle 36.

Local tip: Pick up a coffee at Amor de Café on Calle 22, on the park's west side, then walk over to the carts selling marquesitas inside the park.2

Parque de las Américas

The park was inaugurated on 16 September 1945. The architects were Manuel and Max Amábilis, and construction began in 1942 with about 200 workers, under governor Ernesto Novelo Torres.1 It fills four blocks bounded by Calles 18, 19, 22 and 23, divided by Avenida Colón and Calle 20.1

Its fountain has seven serpent figures 4.70 m tall and two Chaac masks, the Centro Cultural José Martí fills the southwest block, and columns around the park carry the names and shields of the nations of the Americas.1 Carts in the park sell marquesitas (rolled wafer crêpes), elotes and hot dogs, some with lines of 10 to 15 people.2 The park also has a library, a bandshell to the northwest and a garden and playground for children.21

La Ibérica and the early colonia

The first residents had a silent-movie theater and an artificial lake. La Ibérica, at Calle 37 and Calle 74, opened as a hospital of the Spanish welfare society in 1918 and served as one for half a century; since 1998 its two hectares have been a state-run cultural center, mostly for seniors.2

Amor de Café, at Calle 22 #105 between 21 and 23, is on the park's west edge, and Liuba Café Gourmet sits where Calle 20 crosses Colón.
