Itzimná was a village before it was a colonia. Its church, on Calle 20 between 19 and 21, faces a tree-lined square and stands on the site of a Maya place of worship dedicated to the god Itzamná; the original baptismal font survives.1 Around 1893 the Mérida tram company opened the Recreos de Itzimná, an amusement park meant in part to fill its trams.2

Colonia México, just south of the church square, arose in the late 1940s under governor Ernesto Novelo Torres. It was planned as housing for the middle and working classes and became an upper-class district of modern houses instead. The state development agency Fomento de Yucatán carried out the project.3

Local tip: Take a cold brew outside at Manifesto Barra Cold Brew on Calle 18, then walk about four blocks north to Itzimná's church square.4

Modern houses on Calles 18 to 29

Diario de Yucatán describes houses with open plans, thin slabs, V-shaped metal columns, butterfly roofs and corner windows, by architects including Félix Mier y Terán and Fernando López Escalante.3 By 2021 many had been demolished, and others had become cafés, restaurants, wine shops, breweries and offices.3

Manifesto's northern bar, Manifesto Barra Cold Brew, is on one of these streets at Calle 18 #107, between 27 and 29.4 It has outdoor seating, unlike the roaster's original café in Santiago.5

Getting here from Paseo de Montejo

Paseo de Montejo was extended north in stages: the first extension of 440 m came in 1926, and the second, 1,200 m long, linked the avenue to Colonia México in 1950.7 El Orden del Caos (No. 82) and A ki' la cafe (No. 111) are on the avenue itself, and the café of the Centro Cultural Dante is on Prolongación Paseo de Montejo at Calle 17.

The church square and its fiesta

The statue of Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) was brought from Paris in the early 20th century, and the patron-saint fiesta falls in the first half of October. The church opens daily 07:00–12:00 and 16:00–20:00.1

The Recreos de Itzimná did not last: the amusement park disappeared in the first decades of the 20th century, a decline the Por Esto account links to the Mexican Revolution.2 Café Mosaico at Calle 21 #105 and Dilan Cafetería at Calle 25 #124a are a short walk from the square.

Farther into Colonia México, Coffee Cake is at Calle 27 and Calle 38, Lóoch Barrita de Café on Calle 24 between 31A and 31B, Sitå Velú at Calle 27 #281 and Caffe Latte on Avenida Rotary Internacional. JC's Tree Coffee (Calle 39 #449G) and Café Murano (Calle 39A #460) are on the southern edge.
